The Pixel 9 with its Tensor G4 chip is almost here! But Google isn’t waiting – reports say they’ve finished designing the next-gen Tensor G5 chip for the upcoming Pixel 10.

These reports highlight Google sticking with TSMC, a leader in chip manufacturing. The Tensor G5 will use TSMC’s powerful second-generation 3nm process (N3E). This is a big change for Google. Before, they worked with Samsung for both making the chips (at Samsung’s factory) and designing them together (especially the first Tensor, which was like a special version of Samsung’s Exynos 2100).

The reports show Samsung’s involvement has slowly gone down, leading to the all-Google-designed Tensor G5. This move shows Google’s growing skill in chip design and gives them more time to test the chip before the Pixel 10 launches.

There are many reasons why creating a custom chip is a good idea, especially for a company like Google that runs the popular Android operating system. The key here is optimization, something familiar to Mac and iPhone users. By perfectly matching the software to the chip (and vice versa), Google can make both work better together. This can lead to a big boost in how efficient the phone is, how well it runs, and how long its battery lasts. But making a custom chip takes a lot of resources – a team of very skilled and well-coordinated chip designers – and a lot of money.

Google’s decision to design the chip themselves shows their commitment to Pixel phones for the long term. By controlling both the hardware and software, Google can create a system that works very well together. Similar to Apple’s approach with their A-series chips and iOS. This could mean a smoother experience for users, faster response times. And maybe even brand new features that take advantage of the unique abilities of the Tensor G5.

While details about the Tensor G5’s design and how well it performs are still unknown, Google’s move to design the chip themselves shows a bold step forward in their goal of making Pixel a top choice in the premium smartphone market. Their success will depend on whether they can turn their design skills into real-world performance improvements that excite customers.
