Just a year ago, on July 5th, 2023, Threads launched as a new social media app from Meta, aiming to be a possible competitor to Twitter. Today, the platform can celebrate a big milestone: 175 million people using it every month! This exciting news came straight from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who himself posted it on Threads.
Threads Turns One: A Text-Friendly Social Spot Finds Its Crowd
Threads’ growth took off like a rocket at first, with a whopping 100 million users joining in just five days! Things have settled down a bit since then, but Threads is still growing steadily. In February, they had 130 million users, and by April, that number jumped to 150 million.
To mark this 175 million user mark, the Threads team is giving everyone a fun little gift: special, limited-edition app icons! You can now pick from five new icons, on top of the regular one. They’re even adding a new icon every day, giving you more ways to personalize your Threads experience. To find these cool icons, just head over to your profile (look for the birthday cake icon) and tap on “Your Profile.” But be quick – you only have until July 12th to grab your favorite one!

Another cool thing about Threads is how it connects with the rest of Meta’s apps. Since June, people in over 100 countries can share their Threads posts with something called the “fediverse.” This is basically a giant social media network that’s not controlled by one company, kind of like a big online community garden!
Happy Birthday, Threads! Discover the Journey to 175 Million Users
Here’s something interesting about what people actually post on Threads: most of it is just plain text! That’s right, 63% of all posts on Threads don’t have any pictures or videos. But pictures are still pretty popular, with about 1 in 4 posts having at least one photo. Another new trend is voice notes, which seem to be especially popular with younger users. In fact, Instagram (which owns Threads) did a survey with 2,000 people from different ages, and it showed that teenagers and young adults are much more likely to use voice notes than people in their parents’ or grandparents’ age groups.
Threads’ first year has been a success story! They’ve gotten a lot of new users and have become a cool part of the Meta family. Even though there are already a lot of social media apps out there, Threads stands out with its focus on conversations without all the fancy pictures and videos. Plus, connecting with the fediverse gives them a unique edge. As the app keeps growing, it will be fun to see how they adapt to what users want and how they carve out their own special place in the ever-changing world of social media.
