Apple has officially scheduled an event for September 9 where it will reveal its latest iPhones. The iPhone 16 series has leaked in the past months and some of their details have been revealed. Recent rumors suggest all four models will include 8 GB of RAM as the maximum RAM amount. That should be enough for running iOS smoothly, but it’s behind what we currently have on the Android side of the coin. According to new reports, the next iPhone 17 series will bring upgrades in the RAM department by making the jump to 12 GB of RAM.
iPhone 17 to Bring 16 GB RAM Thanks to Apple Intelligence
Considering how Apple is conservative with iPhone’s hardware, 8 GB to 12 GB is a significant jump. The jump is tied to the company’s AI Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 16 series is expected to bring cloud-based Apple Intelligence features. However, with the iPhone 17 series, more AI features will be processed on-device. Hence, it will certainly need more RAM to keep everything running smoothly.

It is worth noting that Google also made a significant jump in this regard with its Pixel 9 family. The base Pixel 9 models feature 12 GB of RAM, while the Pro variants have a whopping 16 GB of RAM. Google also used to be conservative in the hardware. Or at least, more conservative than the Chinese brands we’re used to seeing with their 24 GB smartphones.
The addition in the RAM department also has to do with the advancement of Google’s own AI solution Google Gemini. The addition of more RAM makes these devices more future-proof as AI technologies are set to keep evolving in the coming years. Google’s Pixel 9 smartphones are using a chunk of RAM only for AI apps and nothing besides it.
While Apple traditionally kept itself out of this hardware race, the rise of AI will make the upgrade inevitable. Of course, we need to digest this news with a pinch of salt. The iPhone 17 series is still months away from a release.
