New WhatsApp Update: Block Spam from Unknown Accounts Easily

WhatsApp Custom List

If you’ve ever received messages from unknown numbers on WhatsApp. Especially from international prefixes, you understand how frustrating it can be. Fortunately, WhatsApp is beginning to address this issue. Albeit in a limited way, by introducing a new feature: the ability to block messages from unknown accounts. However, the solution may not be as effective as many users had hoped.

Previously, WhatsApp allowed users to manage unwanted messages by providing a summary panel. This panel made it easy to block and report unknown contacts and gave insight into which country the message originated from. Now, WhatsApp is expanding this with a new advanced setting aimed at reducing the volume of unwanted messages.

Block Messages from Strangers on WhatsApp – But Not All of Them

WhatsApp

Spam has become an increasing issue on WhatsApp. Unlike platforms like Instagram, where message requests are filtered, anyone can send you a message on WhatsApp without prior approval. While the app does notify users when a message is from a stranger, the messages still appear in the inbox like any other, along with notifications.

Gizchina News of the week

Recently, WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, has taken steps to address this with a new setting that blocks messages from unknown accounts. Although still in the testing phase, this feature is available to some users. Particularly those using the beta version of WhatsApp. If you’d like to try it out, here’s how you can enable it:

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to the Privacy section.
  3. Tap on Advanced.
  4. Enable the Block messages from unknown accounts option.

Once activated, this setting will automatically block messages from unknown accounts. However, it’s important to note that this feature doesn’t block all messages from strangers. Instead, it’s specifically designed to prevent spam attacks that can overwhelm your inbox and negatively impact app performance.

According to the company, this setting works as a temporary shield. Particularly when users receive a large volume of messages from strangers. Once the flood of messages slows down, the setting no longer blocks these messages, and they are allowed through as normal.

A Limited Solution with Room for Improvement

While this new feature may help reduce spam, it’s not the comprehensive solution many users were hoping for. The option only temporarily blocks unknown messages during spam attacks, leaving users vulnerable to unwanted messages in less extreme circumstances. A more robust solution, such as permanently blocking all messages from strangers or filtering them into a separate inbox, would be a welcome addition.

For now, despite its limitations, enabling this feature is advisable as it offers some level of protection from spam. Although not perfect, it’s a step in the right direction, and users have little to lose by turning it on.
