Microsoft has rolled out an optional update for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. Known as KB5043145, this update introduces new features for the taskbar, Start menu, and lock screen, while also offering several improvements under the hood. The update raises the system version number to 22621.4247/22631.4247 and will become available to all users on patch day in October. If users want immediate access, they can choose to install it manually.
Sharing Files from the Taskbar
One of the standout additions in this update is the ability to share local files directly from the taskbar. When searching for files, users can now share them with friends or colleagues straight from the search results. This streamlines the file-sharing process, saving time and reducing the number of clicks needed.
Updated Start Menu Options
The Start menu has also received improvements. A new “Unsubscribe” option has been integrated into the account management section of the Start menu. By clicking on the ellipsis (…), users can easily switch to another account. This change simplifies the process of switching users, making it quicker and more convenient.

Media Control on the Lock Screen
Another useful addition is the new media control feature on the lock screen. Now, if users are playing music or videos, they can control playback directly from the lock screen without needing to unlock their computer. The media control is displayed at the bottom of the lock screen, offering quick access to basic controls like play, pause, and skip.
Other upgrades
Microsoft has made several background improvements with KB5043145. Stability and performance have been enhanced, and issues with Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge have been resolved. TCP connection accuracy has been improved, which is important for services that sync files.
Additionally, a bug that required users to enter their PIN every time they opened Outlook has been fixed. There’s also a smoother file synchronization process when Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is enabled.
For those using Windows 11 version 22H2, KB5043145 will be the last optional update. Starting in October, only security updates will be provided for this version. Microsoft encourages users of Windows 11 Home and Pro to consider upgrading to version 23H2 or later to continue receiving feature updates.
