OpenAI’s ChatGPT now offers a more natural and interactive voice feature for premium users, allowing fluid conversations with the chatbot. This advanced mode is rolling out gradually but is not yet available in several European countries, including the U.K.
ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Feature
OpenAI first teased the voice feature back in May 2023, gaining attention when a voice resembling Scarlett Johansson’s character from the movie “Her” was included. After facing legal concerns from Johansson’s representatives, the voice was pulled from use. Despite this hiccup, OpenAI continued developing the voice feature, which now includes nine different voices that users can choose from in the app’s settings.
Unlike the free version, which still has some voice capabilities, the premium version responds more quickly and allows users to interrupt and make adjustments in real-time. You can access advanced voice settings by subscribing to one of OpenAI’s paid tiers: Plus, Team, or Enterprise.

How to Use ChatGPT’s Voice Feature
If you subscribe to one of the premium plans, getting started with the new voice feature is easy. Ensure your ChatGPT app is up to date. Once OpenAI has activated the feature for your device, you’ll get a notification in the app. Tap “Continue” to begin, then start a new chat. Look for the sound wave icon next to the microphone icon in the chat field, and tap it to enable the voice mode.
The voice feature is versatile. You can have ChatGPT tell you a bedtime story, help with interview preparation, or even assist with language learning. The AI also supports customizations like speaking faster or adopting a regional accent.
Competing with Google and Meta
OpenAI is facing increased competition in the voice-enabled AI space. Google recently introduced its Gemini Live voice feature, available on Android devices, and Meta is planning to release celebrity voices for platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
Still, OpenAI remains ahead in the generative AI space, with over 200 million weekly active users as of August 2023. The company’s premium ChatGPT plans start at $20 per month, offering features like the advanced voice mode, though there are limits to its usage. After about 30 minutes, users may receive notifications about remaining time for voice mode.
For those with access, ChatGPT’s voice feature offers a dynamic and interactive experience, further expanding the potential of AI in everyday life.
