Qualcomm is set to launch the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for high-end phones

Snapdragon 8 Elite

Qualcomm is ready to launch its new high-end chip for smartphones. This will be a major change, as the name for its top-tier mobile processor moves from “Snapdragon 8 Gen 4” to “Snapdragon 8 Elite”. The shift in branding aligns with Qualcomm’s push to bring more custom-made cores into its chip, aiming to improve phone and PC performance. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is set to make its debut soon, during Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Summit. This event takes place in Hawaii in late October 2024. At this event, Qualcomm will show off its new chip, which is part of its next generation of top mobile hardware. The new chip, known internally as “SM8750” or by its code name “Pakala,” will have two high-end cores and six regular cores. These cores aim to push performance to new levels.

Custom Cores Powering the Chip

The Snapdragon 8 Elite will use Qualcomm’s new custom cores which it calls Phoenix. These are not standard ARM cores as they come with some high-level modifications. Qualcomm acquired this tech from Nuvia, a startup formed by former Apple chip engineers. Nuvia’s expertise is already being used in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips for Windows PCs. The same core designs are now coming to smartphones, offering a new level of performance, especially in devices like the upcoming Xiaomi 15.

Gizchina News of the week

One of the key goals of the Snapdragon 8 Elite is to compete with Intel and Apple’s processors in terms of performance. The new chip should hit clock speeds beyond the 4 GHz mark, allowing smartphones to achieve higher speeds and improved efficiency. Qualcomm hopes that these changes will allow its Snapdragon-powered PCs to stand toe-to-toe with those using Apple’s M chips.
