Apple refreshes iPad mini with Apple A17 Pro and More upgrades

Apple recently unveiled its latest iPad mini (2024) through a straightforward press release, marking one of the most modest updates in the history of the iPad lineup. The most significant enhancement is the introduction of the Apple A17 Pro chip, which first appeared in last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

iPad Mini (2024) Specifications and Features

This new model succeeds the 2021 iteration and will be positioned to receive Apple Intelligence, set to be gradually rolled out with the upcoming iPadOS 18.1 later this month. The addition of the A17 Pro chip promises improved performance and efficiency, although the overall design and features of the iPad mini remain largely unchanged. This release underscores Apple’s focus on incremental upgrades while continuing to refine its devices for enhanced user experiences.

In addition to the upgraded A17 Pro chip, the new iPad mini brings several other enhancements. The base storage has doubled from 64GB to 128GB, providing more space for apps, media, and files. Connectivity has also been improved, with support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a faster USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2 port, ensuring quicker data transfers and more reliable wireless connections. Notably, the iPad mini now supports the Apple Pencil Pro stylus, offering creative users a more precise drawing and writing experience. A fresh Blue color option has been introduced, complementing the existing choices of Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray, adding more personalization to the device lineup. These updates, though subtle, collectively elevate the iPad mini’s functionality and appeal.

Cameras and Apple A17 Pro

The remaining specifications of the new iPad mini are unchanged from its predecessor. It still features the same 8.3-inch Liquid Retina IPS LCD with a 1,488 x 2,266px resolution. It has a 3:2 aspect ratio, offering vibrant colors and sharp detail. However, the refresh rate remains limited to 60Hz. Apple continues to reserve the smoother 120Hz ProMotion technology for its higher-end Pro models. The iPad mini retains its pair of 12MP cameras—one on the front and one on the back. While the camera hardware is unchanged, the new A17 Pro chip brings an enhanced Image Signal Processor (ISP), which enables Smart HDR 4 support, allowing for better dynamic range and improved photo quality in varying lighting conditions. Despite the modest updates, these tweaks ensure the new mini remains a capable and versatile tablet for everyday tasks.

The iPad mini (2024) continues to offer a reliable Touch ID for biometric authentication. It allows users to unlock the device and make app purchases with ease. It also carries over the same 19.3-watt-hour battery as its predecessor. As per Apple, it provides up to 10 hours of usage when browsing the web or streaming videos over Wi-Fi. In terms of charging, the retail package includes a 20W USB-C power adapter. Additionally, Apple has introduced a new Smart Folio case priced at $59. It offers some level of protection and functionality with a slim design. The case’s design allows it to cover the front and back of the tablet. It also serves as a stand, enhancing usability whether you’re typing, watching videos, or using the Apple Pencil Pro.

Pricing and Availability

The Apple iPad mini (2024) price starts at $499/€599/£499 for the base 128GB Wi-Fi-only model. The cellular variant costs $649/€769/£649. Pre-orders are available starting today, with shipments and general sales set to begin on October 23. This pricing positions the iPad mini as a mid-tier option in Apple’s tablet lineup.
