Samsung Finally Adopts Seamless Updates

Samsung has long hesitated to adopt a system that other Android brands have used for years: seamless or A/B updates. This update type lets users keep using their devices while the new system software installs in the background. Since its debut in 2016, this Android feature has made updates quicker and safer. With seamless updates, a new OS version installs on a second, hidden partition, making the process nearly invisible to users. The phone can revert to the previous OS without hassle if something goes wrong.

Samsung did not join the party early

Despite the clear perks of this method, Samsung has yet to adopt it fully. While Android has pushed brands to switch to A/B updates since Android 11, Samsung has stayed with the standard process. This lack of support has left Samsung users waiting longer for updates, sometimes unable to use their devices during installs. Only one Samsung model, the Galaxy A55, offers seamless updates—an outlier in their vast lineup.

Recent reports from known leaker chunvn8888 hint that Samsung is set to join the trend with the launch of the Galaxy S25 series. Starting in 2025, the S25 series will likely be Samsung’s first flagship line with full support for seamless updates. This change should mean a better user experience, faster installs, and less risk if an update fails.

Other Devices May Follow

Samsung’s move toward seamless updates could set a new trend for the brand. As of now, only newer models like the Galaxy S25 will benefit, as retrofitting this feature onto older devices is not an option. While Samsung has not given a clear answer on why it delayed adopting seamless updates, this step with the S25 marks a shift that could extend to other Samsung models in the future.

Although Samsung has yet to announce an official release date, experts anticipate the Galaxy S25 to debut around mid-January 2025, based on established release schedules. Speculation also hints at a potential “Slim” edition of the S25, introducing another high-end alternative for enthusiasts. In conclusion, the Galaxy S25 will advance Samsung toward the seamless, more secure update functionality that Android has advocated for several years.
