PlayStation 5 Surpasses NES with 65.5 Million Units Sold

PS5 - PlayStation 5

Sony recently shared its financial report, revealing that the PlayStation 5 has sold a total of 65.5 million units. While this number is still behind the Nintendo Switch‘s 146 million units, it’s worth noting that the two consoles target different audiences. Despite the gap, the PlayStation 5 has already surpassed the classic NES in sales. The next milestone is the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 75.94 million units. Although reaching this number will take time, the PlayStation 5 is on a solid path to achieving it.

Sony Sells 6.3 million PS5s - PlayStation 5

As reported by Wccftech, in the latest quarter, Sony sold 3.8 million PlayStation 5 units. This is a drop from the 4.9 million units sold in the same period last year. However, this slight decline in console sales did not hurt Sony’s overall gaming business. In fact, PlayStation game sales saw strong growth, increasing by almost 15% compared to the previous year. A total of 77.7 million game copies were sold, showing that interest in PlayStation titles remains high.

One key factor behind this success was the new exclusive game, Astro Bot, which quickly sold 1.5 million copies. This early success highlights the strong loyalty of PlayStation fans and the impact of Sony’s strategy in launching popular exclusive games.

Financially, this was a great quarter for Sony’s gaming division. Revenue in the segment increased by 57%, thanks to strong hardware and software sales. Even more impressive, the net profit of the gaming division almost tripled compared to the same period last year. Currently, Sony’s gaming division contributes to 45% of the company’s total net profit, making it a crucial part of the business.

The PlayStation 5’s growing sales and expanding game library highlight Sony’s strong position in the gaming market. Despite challenges like supply chain disruptions and competition from other consoles, Sony has managed to build a popular platform with a loyal customer base. As the PlayStation 5 continues to close in on the sales figures of older consoles like the Nintendo 3DS, it is on track to become one of the best-selling gaming consoles ever.

Sony’s continued focus on delivering high-quality exclusive games and enhancing the PlayStation ecosystem is proving effective, driving both hardware sales and software revenue. The future looks bright for the PlayStation 5 as it aims for even higher sales milestones.
