Mastering WhatsApp: Secrets to Secure Your Conversations

WhatsApp recently introduced a Chat Lock feature to enhance privacy for conversations on both iPhones and Android devices. This feature moves locked chats to a “Locked Chats” folder at the top of your chat list, but that visibility could still invite attention from people with access to your phone. To make it more discreet, WhatsApp now offers a Secret Code feature, adding another layer of security.

What is the Secret Code?

The Secret Code feature allows you to set a unique password to improve the privacy of locked chats. Once activated, this feature hides the Locked Chats folder from your main chat list. To access these chats, you’ll type the Secret Code into the search bar, making it less obvious that locked chats exist.

If the code is entered incorrectly or if someone attempts to access your chats without knowing it, the locked chats remain hidden and secure.

How to Set Up the Secret Code

Before setting a Secret Code, you must first lock your chats. Here’s how to enable it:

1. Open WhatsApp and go to the Locked Chats folder.
2. Tap the overflow menu (three vertical dots) in the top-right corner.
3. Select “Chat lock settings.”
4. Tap “Secret code.”

Now, enter a memorable code (letters or emojis are allowed), then tap “Next” and reenter it to confirm. If the codes match, select “Done.”

Limitations of WhatsApp’s Secret Code Feature

While the Secret Code feature enhances privacy, it has some drawbacks. Each time you access locked chats, you must enter the code, which may feel inconvenient if you frequently check those chats.

If someone discovers your code, they can access your locked chats. For added security, enable two-factor authentication. If you forget your Secret Code, WhatsApp requires you to clear all locked chats, potentially resulting in data loss if not backed up.

What to Do If You Forget the Secret Code

If you forget your Secret Code, go to Settings > Privacy > Chat lock > Unlock and clear locked chats to unlock them. This step erases all locked chats, so remember to back up your data regularly.

Additional Privacy Tips for WhatsApp Users

For desktop or web users, the Secret Code and chat lock features aren’t available. However, archiving chats can keep them out of sight while still accessible. This simple option adds another layer of privacy for WhatsApp web users.
