Google Maps is introducing new features just in time for the holiday season, aimed at making travel easier and more convenient:
New Features in Google Maps
1. Report Transit Delays
Now, when you view a transit station in Google Maps, a âReport delayâ button lets you flag delays on specific lines. Youâll also see a yellow âDelaysâ card showing the number of reports and an option to confirm if there are still issues. In addition to crowd-sourced data, Google Maps will also pull delay information from local transit agencies.
2. Improved Routing for Towing Vehicles
For drivers with Android Automotive (like those in the 2024 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon), Google Maps now offers routing for cars with trailers or cargo attachments. You can input the size of your load to receive routes that avoid low bridges and tunnels. More vehicles will be supported soon.
3. Trip Planning and Charging Station Compatibility
With Android Automotive, you can plan trips on your phone, including all charging stops, and send the plan directly to your car. If youâre unsure of your plug type, simply enter your vehicleâs make and model into Maps, and compatible charging stations will appear whenever you search for them.
4. In-Stock Product Searches
Google Maps now lets you search for specific items and shows nearby stores that have them in stock. This feature works for items across categories like home goods, electronics, clothing, and groceries. It functions similarly to searching for a dish and finding nearby restaurants that serve it.
Holiday Travel Tips from Google
Thanksgiving: Avoid traveling on Tuesday and Wednesday. The roads are usually clearest the Sunday or Monday before Thanksgiving around 8 p.m. local time. However, Friday before Thanksgiving (especially 1-2 p.m.) can be very congested.
Thanksgiving Day: If driving is necessary, leave before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid heavy traffic.
Black Friday: Peak traffic is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Christmas: Expect the heaviest traffic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the days before Christmas.
These updates and tips are designed to ease both holiday shopping and travel, providing users with more control over their routes and plans.
