As per a new report, Google is slowly merging Android and ChromeOS. The company is trying to “turn Chrome OS into Android” for the sake of competing with the iPad. The result may be a standalone experience for large-sized devices but that still feels and looks like Android.
ChromeOS to Merge Into Android to Compete with iPadOS
This may not make much sense after all the effort put into Chrome OS all those years. However, Google is known for taking controversial routes from time to time. Also, we don’t need to argue how Android is way more popular than Chrome OS. While these two offer different and distinct, experiences, Android started to be a more complete suite even when running on devices like the Chromebook. The new info comes from an unnamed source that claims Google plans to “migrate Chrome OS fully over to Android”. The obvious conclusion here is that Android could soon be the only OS for all Google products, and it may offer a similar Chrome OS experience to computers and devices in this niche.
Back in June, Google announced that Chrome OS would start using part of Android. Now, the report claims the merger will go even deeper than that. If we look at iPadOS, is an alternative version of iOS with some tablet-specific features. Google could simply add tablet-specific features to Android over the past years. So, we don’t know exactly how Chrome OS can help in this regard. The OS is designed for cheap laptops and doesn’t bring many advanced features like Windows or macOS.
Anyway, you should not hold your breath for this ChromeOS & Android merger. There are rumors about a Pixel laptop coming soon, it could come with this new Android/ChromeOS iteration. But still, this merger could be a thing that will take years to become a reality.
