Samsung has announced significant changes to its One UI 7 Beta program, restricting participation primarily to owners of its latest flagship, the Galaxy S24 series. This decision has disappointed many users of older models like the Galaxy S23 and S22, who had hoped to experience the new software earlier.
Limited access sparks user frustration
The One UI 7 Beta program, launched on December 5, 2024, was initially expected to include a broader range of Samsung devices. However, recent reports reveal that only Galaxy S24 users will gain access to the testing phase. This comes as a blow to Galaxy S23 and S22 owners, who must now wait for the official release. The revised strategy may stem from delays in the beta rollout, initially slated for November, which frustrated users and disrupted expectations.
Reasons for narrowing the focus
In previous years, Samsung allowed various Galaxy models to participate in beta testing programs, but this year’s approach reflects a shift in priorities. One possible reason is the growing pressure on Samsung to align its software updates with Google’s Android development timeline. One UI 7, based on Android 15, offers enhanced features and an updated interface aimed at improving the user experience. However, with Android 16 expected to debut in mid-2025, Samsung may be prioritizing the Galaxy S24 to ensure a smoother and faster rollout.
Beta testing timeline
News says One UI 7 Beta 3 will soon roll out for the Galaxy S24 group, with more test phases likely to come. The full One UI 7 update is due to launch at Samsung’s Unpacked event on Jan. 22, 2025. At this show, Samsung will also reveal its Galaxy S25 line, the Galaxy Ring 2, and new AR gear. Dropping old Galaxy models from the beta shows Samsung’s issues in keeping up with Google’s Android plans. While this beta may help Samsung speed up work for its top phones, it could upset Galaxy fans who own older models.
