Vivo is gearing up to challenge Apple’s Vision Pro headset, even though the Vision Pro hasn’t seen strong sales. During an event today, Vivo revealed plans to launch its mixed reality (MR) headset next year. The company plans to showcase a prototype of the device around September or October. Vivo also hinted that the headset will include features designed to outperform those offered by the Vision Pro. It’s interesting to see other companies entering, while others try to leave.
Vivo’s To Set Foot on The New Territory of Mixed Reality Headsets
Honestly, the Apple Vision Pro shouldn’t be considered a commercial failure even with weak sales. The device costs $3499 or $291.58 per month in a 12-month plan. It’s steep for most consumers, especially for a device that is not attractive to a wide audience yet. This could become interesting in a few years, but for now, it’s a niche device that will attract only enthusiasts. Despite this, Vivo seems to be confident in this new category.
While Vivo aims to outshine the Vision Pro, it’s worth noting that Apple’s headset will have been on the market for over a year and a half by the time Vivo’s mixed reality (MR) device debuts. Beating an older product may not seem like a groundbreaking achievement. Vivo’s commitment to its MR headset is evident, with a dedicated team of 500 people working on the project. Despite the Vision Pro’s slow sales, Vivo appears confident in the potential of this market. If Vivo manages to offer similar or even better features at a significantly lower price, it could appeal to a broader audience.
By late 2025, Vivo plans to conduct “high-fidelity prototype experiences” in various cities across China. However, the actual release date remains uncertain. It depends on the development of supporting content ecosystems, as stated by a Vivo executive.
Considering all this, it’s unclear if the new device will reach the mass consumer market. We expect more details to emerge in due time.
