According to a new report, Sony may explore the idea of bringing back some of its classic PlayStation games. So far, the company has been focusing on newer franchises and remasters. The latter category has been a reason for backlash from PS fans who criticize the company’s investment in remasters that aren’t really needed in most cases. Meanwhile, many of the company’s beloved titles from the past, remain untouched for nearly a decade or more.
Sony Considers Bringing Back Some Classic PlayStation Franchises
Though Sony hasn’t confirmed these plans, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, hinted at the possibility. While it’s still just speculation, the idea is worth considering, especially since Sony seems to be leaning in that direction. While the company’s Astro Bot achieved the Game of the Year Award at TGA 2025, many fans are upset with the lack of new games for their PS5. Instead of full-fledged titles to explore the console, the company keeps doing remasters like the Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster. This year, Sony also had a huge failure with its Live Service Game Concord. That may explain why the company is considering new routes.
Sony is yet to confirm its plans but is considering bringing back some of its classic games. In a recent interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, mentioned that the company is always exploring ways to revive legacy IP while also developing new franchises. He stated, “As part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we continually explore opportunities to leverage our legacy IP as well as develop new franchises.”
This suggests that Sony is, at least, thinking about resurrecting some of its older games. If the idea proves viable, the company would need to decide the right moment to make it happen.
Some of the Legacy Franchises that Sony Could Bring Back
So, which game franchises might Sony bring back? While Hulst didn’t name any specific titles, several iconic PlayStation franchises have been dormant for quite some time. Notable franchises include: Socom, Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and Syphon Filter.

Killzone could also be a candidate, although Guerrilla Games has publicly stated that it’s “done with Killzone.” The recent inclusion of Killzone content in Helldivers II might count as the franchise being revisited. Some franchises haven’t seen new releases but have received remasters or remakes, such as PaRappa the Rapper (remastered in 2017) and MediEvil (remade in 2019).
Alongside discussions on legacy franchises, Hulst also addressed the role of AI in PlayStation’s future, emphasizing that AI won’t replace human involvement in game development.
