Samsung introduced Bixby as its digital assistant in 2017. Despite years of effort, it never matched the success of rivals like Google Assistant or Gemini. Samsung even included a dedicated Bixby button on older devices, but it didn’t help. Now, with the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung is making a major change. Gemini is the new default assistant on these phones, as reported by AndroidAuthority.

Previously, using Gemini on Samsung phones wasn’t simple. You had to swipe up from the corner of the screen. Depending on your settings, holding the power button launched Bixby or showed the power menu. Assigning Gemini to the power button was possible through Good Lock, but it was complicated. Most users didn’t bother.

The Galaxy S25 changes this. You can now pick which assistant to use with the power button easily. Gemini is selected by default. Samsung confirmed Bixby isn’t going away. It will still handle some backend AI tasks. However, the company is shifting its focus to Gemini as the primary assistant.

Gemini is also getting new features. Google is rolling out “action chaining,” which lets Gemini link tasks across apps like Maps, Messages, and others. Gemini will soon work with Samsung’s own apps, including Reminders, Calendar, Notes, and Clock. These updates aren’t limited to the Galaxy S25. Older Samsung models that support Gemini will also get these features. This is great news for users who rely on Samsung’s apps. It makes Gemini more versatile and user-friendly.

Some users may miss Bixby. It’s still useful for certain tasks, like finding SmartTags or controlling smart home devices. However, Gemini offers more features and a better experience overall. Samsung’s decision to let users choose their assistant is a welcome change.
