After releasing two developer betas, Google has officially launched the first public beta of Android 16. The update is now available as an over-the-air (OTA) update for Pixel devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program, starting with the Pixel 6 and newer models.
Adaptive apps for better scalability
A standout feature of the Android 16 Beta 1 is adaptive apps. Google aims to ensure that apps scale seamlessly across different screen sizes, orientations, and form factors. Starting with API level 36, apps must support resizable windows on screens with a minimum width of 600dp. Additionally, developers will no longer be allowed to restrict app window scaling or orientation, enabling better functionality on foldable and large-screen devices.
Live updates for dynamic notifications
Android 16 brings Live Updates, Google’s take on Apple’s Live Activities from the iPhone 14 Pro. These smart alerts track ongoing tasks like maps, food orders, and rides. The feature uses a Progress Style alert layout with icons, steps, and task states you can tweak. Samsung’s Now Bar in One UI 7 offers a similar tool, but Google’s version is built to work better across all Android devices.
Advanced video and camera enhancements
The beta brings native support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, enabling professional-grade video recording and post-production. This codec supports up to 8K video at a 2Gbps bitrate. Google has also included a night mode for cameras, better text rendering for vertical scripts and new features to make the platform easier to use for everyone.
Google plans to roll out at least three more Android 16 public betas before the final version is ready. A major beta with fresh APIs will arrive in Q2, followed by a smaller update in Q4 to fix bugs. Android 16 is set to launch earlier than past versions, with the full release expected in March.
