WhatsApp is set to expand its financial services in India. A recent APK teardown by Android Authority suggests a new bill payment feature is in development. The latest beta version (2.25.3.15) includes references to this feature, showing Meta’s plans to enhance payments in its largest market.
WhatsApp to Introduce Bill Payments in India
Currently, WhatsApp allows users in India to send money and pay businesses through UPI. Soon, they may also be able to pay various bills directly within the app. Data from the beta version shows that users could soon pay for:
- Electricity bills
- Mobile prepaid recharges
- LPG gas payments
- Water bills
- Landline postpaid bills
- Rent payments
The feature is still in development. However, an empty activity for bill payments is already visible in the beta version. This suggests that Meta is actively working on it before a full release.
A Major Expansion for WhatsApp Pay
This update comes at a critical time. In December 2023, India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) lifted the cap on WhatsApp Pay’s user onboarding. Previously, WhatsApp Pay could only add users in phases. Now, it can reach all 532 million users in India. This change allows WhatsApp Pay to compete directly with PhonePe and Google Pay.
Bill payments could be a game-changer. India’s digital payments market is growing fast. Adding this feature would make WhatsApp a one-stop payment solution. It could also increase user engagement and boost adoption of WhatsApp Pay.
Challenges and Expected Rollout
Despite the exciting prospects, challenges remain. Regulatory and logistical hurdles may delay the launch. Meta will need to ensure compliance with financial regulations. It will also have to form partnerships with service providers.
For now, Indian users can look forward to a smoother payment experience. If WhatsApp successfully integrates bill payments, it could reshape India’s digital payment landscape. Everyone is waiting to see how and when Meta will launch this feature.
