This update, which appears to have been rolled out in a recent beta version, has made the pill-shaped text field significantly thicker and longer. This enhancement is not just an optical illusion; it provides users with a more spacious area to compose their messages. Additionally, the voice memo button, located to the right of the text field, has also been slightly enlarged. This button dynamically transforms into the send button when text is entered, maintaining its functional role within the interface.
Google Messages: Interface Consistency and Feature Access
Despite the changes in size, all interactive elements in the Messages app remain in their familiar positions. The plus (+) button is still conveniently located inside the text field on the left side. This button serves as a gateway to a range of additional features, including:
- Gallery – Access and send photos from your device.
- GIFs – Browse and share animated GIFs.
- Stickers – Add fun and expressive stickers to your conversations.
- Files – Send documents and other file types.
- Location – Share your real-time location with contacts.
- Contacts – Quickly send contact details to recipients.

- Selfie GIF – Create and send animated selfies.
Other notable shortcuts within the text input area include a smiley face emoji icon, which opens the emoji keyboard when tapped, and a Gallery shortcut, displaying the camera app at the top and the photo gallery at the bottom for easy media selection.
How to Get the Update
As of now, the expanded text field and interface adjustments have been spotted in beta version 20250224_01_RC00 of Google Messages. However, Google has not yet rolled out this update to all users. If you want to check whether the update is available for your device, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap on your profile icon in the upper right corner.
- Select Manage apps & device.
- Tap Updates available and scroll down to Messages.
- If an update is available, tap Update to install the latest version.
On my device, the latest version available is 20250225_01_RC00, indicating that newer iterations may already be available. Updating the app ensures you get the latest features, including the larger text field.
Checking Your Google Messages Version

- Go to Settings.
- Navigate to Apps.
- Tap See all apps and select Messages.
- Scroll to the bottom to find the version number of the installed app.
