Adobe is bringing Photoshop to mobile, starting with iOS. The company announced on Tuesday that an Android version will launch later this year.
A Mobile-Friendly Photoshop
The Photoshop for iPhone app offers both free and paid features. It includes key editing tools like layers and masking, just like the desktop version. However, Adobe has optimized them for smaller screens. The app also integrates with Photoshop on the web, but only for paid users.
To unlock premium tools and Photoshop on the web, users can subscribe for $7.99 per month. Those who already pay for Photoshop plans will get mobile access at no extra cost.
Why Adobe is Going Mobile
Adobe hopes to attract new users, especially younger creators who edit directly on their phones. The company says it built this app “from the ground up” to welcome a new generation of designers. By launching on mobile, Adobe can compete with apps like Snapseed, Picsart, and Canva.
For existing Photoshop users, the app offers a seamless way to edit on the go and switch between devices.
Features for Free and Paid Users
Free users get access to Photoshop’s core tools, including:
- Selections, layers, and masks for blending images.
- Tap Select to remove, recolor, or replace objects.
- Spot Healing Brush for quick touch-ups.
- Adobe Firefly AI tools, such as Generative Fill and Generative Expand.
- Free Adobe Stock assets for design projects.
- Integration with Adobe Express, Fresco, and Lightroom for a smooth workflow.
Paid users get even more features, such as:
- “Generate Similar” and “Reference Image” for Firefly-powered AI edits.
- Over 20,000 fonts and the ability to import custom fonts.
- Advanced selection tools, like Object Select and Magic Wand.
- Distraction removal with Remove Tool, Clone Stamp, and Content-Aware Fill.
- Lightening, darkening, and blend modes for precise adjustments.
Built for Creators
Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management at Adobe Photoshop, said Adobe worked closely with mobile creators to design the app.
“We talked to a new generation of creators who are very comfortable with phones. We listened to their needs and built the app to work well for them,” she told TechCrunch.
Early testers used the app to design album covers, video thumbnails, memes, podcast art, and fashion lookbooks.
