Snapchat users faced widespread disruptions on Thursday night, with many reporting problems with logging in, sending messages, and overall app performance. According to outage reports from Downdetector, the issues began around 9:30 p.m. EST, with complaints peaking at approximately 10:45 p.m. EST.
Thousands of reports on Downdetector
Downdetector, a website that tracks service outages, recorded as many as 49,000 reports from Snapchat users experiencing technical difficulties. Of these, around 50% were unable to log into their accounts, while 30% faced issues with the app’s functionality. An additional 20% of reports indicated problems with server connectivity.
The outage led to significant frustration among users, many of whom turned to social media platform X to share memes and ask if others were experiencing similar difficulties. The spike in outage reports on Downdetector suggested that the issue was widespread, affecting users across different regions.
Users turn to social media for answers
As Snapchat stayed silent on the issue, users filled X with posts about their woes. Many were upset over not being able to log in, while others shared funny memes about the mess. This is now a usual trend when big social media sites go down, as users often switch to other apps to check if it’s just them or to vent. Despite the flood of gripes, Snapchat did not give quick updates or reasons for the halt. The firm has yet to say if the issue was due to a tech glitch, server crash, or something else.
Service was restored by early morning
According to Livenowfox, by Friday morning at around 5 a.m. ET, the issue appeared to have been resolved. Downdetector no longer showed significant outage reports, and users were able to access Snapchat without problems. However, no official statement has been released by Snapchat regarding the cause of the disruption or any steps taken to prevent similar issues in the future.
For now, Snapchat users can resume normal activity, though the lack of communication from the platform has left some frustrated. The outage serves as a reminder of the reliance on social media services and the impact technical disruptions can have on users worldwide.
