Google’s Pixel 10 to Feature Custom Tensor G5 with Major Upgrades

A new report from Android Authority provides fresh details on Google’s upcoming Pixel 10 series and its next-generation processor, the Tensor G5. The report confirms that Google will design the chip, while TSMC will handle manufacturing. This move marks a shift away from Samsung’s fabrication process. The report also reveals more about the components and improvements inside the new chipset.

TSMC’s 3nm Process for Better Performance

The Tensor G5 will be built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm-class node. This upgrade should improve efficiency, boost performance, and reduce power consumption. The chip will also use Arm Cortex CPU cores, ensuring fast and reliable processing.

New Imagination Technologies GPU

Google is replacing the Arm Mali-G715 MP7 GPU from the Tensor G4. The new chip will feature an Imagination Technologies IMG DXT GPU. This change could lead to better graphics performance, benefiting gaming, video rendering, and overall visuals.

Fully Custom Image Signal Processor (ISP)

For the first time, Google is introducing a fully custom Image Signal Processor (ISP). Previous Tensor chips used modified Samsung ISPs with Google-designed elements. A custom ISP means improved image processing, better low-light photography, and enhanced AI-driven camera features. This change could significantly improve the Pixel 10’s camera performance.

Custom Memory Controller and Video Codec Improvements

Google is also developing a custom memory controller, system cache, and power management module. These enhancements should improve multitasking and energy efficiency.

The company is also switching video codecs. The Tensor G5 will no longer use Google’s custom “BigWave” AV1 codec or Samsung’s Multi-Format Codec (MFC). Instead, it will adopt the Chips&Media WAVE677DV codec, which supports AV1, VP9, HEVC, and H.264. This upgrade should lead to better video playback and streaming performance.

Third-Party Interfaces for Connectivity

Google will rely on third-party components for USB, PCIe, and I3C connectivity. It will also use third-party interfaces for display (DSI and DisplayPort), flash storage, and LPDDR5x memory.
