Over the past few days I have carried around the OnePlus X, LeTV Le1S and Xiaomi Mi4c to perform a camera shootout between these mid-range power houses. The results surprised me, but will they surprise you?
As soon as the OnePlus X was announced people around the world started to compare the mid-range OnePlus with other Chinese smartphones of a similar price. The Xiaomi Mi4c and the LeTV Le1s were the two favourites to take on the OPX with many people asking which of the 3 has the better camera performance? To get an answer to that question I’ve been carrying these three phones around all week taking shots during the day and night to see which is best. Check out my findings below.

Before we take a look at the photographs each phone is capable of capturing lets take a look at the camera hardware of each phone. The table below shows the camera hardware specifications for the rear cameras on the OnePlus X, LeTV Le1s and Xiaomi Mi4C.

OnePlus X vs LeTV Le1S vs Xiaomi Mi4c – My expectations
Having owned the Xiaomi Mi4c and OnePlus X for a few weeks I was fairly confident that these phones would perform well, but between the two I expected I really couldn’t be sure which would come out on top. The LeTV Le 1S arrived with me after the OPX, but having owned the LeTV Le 1, I was fairly confident that the Le1S would be capable of at least equal photography performance to the older model, if not better.
When all 3 phones were out in the field testing the cameras back to back I was pretty shocked by the results.

The following photos were all shot within a few seconds of each other in bright sunny conditions. I have labeled each photo with the phone it was taken with, but you should find that they are listed in the following order: OnePlus X / LeTV Le1 / Xiaomi Mi4C.

The night photos were all again taken back to back within a few seconds of each other. I used the automatic mode of each phone’s camera application and did not use the flash for any of the photos. Again the photos are labeled and follow the order: OnePlus X / LeTV Le1 / Xiaomi Mi4C.

OnePlus X vs LeTV Le1S vs Xiaomi Mi4c – Conclusion
I believe that like me many of you are really shocked by the outcome of this camera shootout. I went in to this photo challenge believing that each phone would be capable of fairly similar photo quality, but the results speak for themselves.
In last place is the LeTV Le1S. This is a real surprise as the Le1 had such a capable camera and great optimisation. The LeTV Le1S really has difficult when there is a lot of light to deal with in daylight shots, but then again on the other hand it also struggles the most in low light situations. The performance of the LeTV’s camera was so bad I kept checking the lens wasn’t dirty!
The OnePlus X offers great camera performance in all conditions. In daylight the OnePlus X does a great job of picking out colours and in particular the deep blue colour of the sky. The OPX also handles low light photography well too. One issue on the OnePlus X is details, taking a closer look at foliage gives an oil painting effect. This isn’t an issues unless you tend to blow your images up very big.
The Xiaomi Mi4C is the real shock of the test. I knew it was a great camera , but I really didn’t expect the Xiaomi to come out on top. In daylight tests I find the Xiaomi Mi4C handles shadows better than the OPX, and in night test the sensor can handle lower light situations better than the other phones.
So those are our results of the camera shoot out and in our opinion the Xiaomi Mi4C comes out on top, the OnePlus X a close 2nd and the LeTV Le1S lags behind in 3rd. Are you surprised by our findings? Let us know what you think of these photos samples and results in the comments below.

Is aperture bigger or smaler better?
Is F2.0 or F2.2 better?
On paper F2.0 should be better, but there is a little more to it than that these days. As you can see the OPX out performed the Letv, although on paper the LETV should be better due to the larger aperture and PDAF.
In daylight I like the OPX the most, in night I like the camera of the Mi4C the most.
So from a camera point you should better get a Le1 instead of a Le1s right now (if thewy can’t fix that via software).
Letv looks like it’s missing some quality lens coating.
Can you please do comparison for letv x500 vs x600? to see which is one better.
Think it’s no point of doing that at the moment, the x600 will beat its big brother x500 easily. When and if they get the firmware sorted out for x500 (Le 1s) it would be interesting.
Andi, heard that the last updates for the LeTV Le1s is causing the bad preformance. Have you any information regarding this? On the Chinese LeTV forum camera and battery seems to be a problem on the current firmware. I experience both problems on my device.

Alright, yep this update was available for my directly when I got my phone from shop.gizchina last Friday, but as I said battery/camera performance is really bad (at least on this version) so I don’t think you will see an improvement. How has the battery been for you on standby? “Android OS” eats more battery then the screen on my device..
heyho i have the same issue with the newest update (eui 5.07 i believe) on the One Pro usually the battery is 1,5 days of normal use atm. its about 0,75 days (xD) of normal use hope the next update will roll out soon 😉

I’m not sure about this, but I’ve used google maps once for navigation with my car since I got the phone and that worked great.

If it’s not a high quality lens then F2.2 is usually ‘safer’. The faster the lens; F2.0, F1.8, the better the lens needs to be to get the results. You can’t adjust a phone camera aperture size like you can a proper lens, so you rely on the aperture having quality glass within it’s entire field of view. The edges of traditional lens tend to weaker than the centre, so even the best lens need stopping down (from say F1.4 to F1.8 or more) to improve sharpness (and also increase depth of field).
Hi Steve, I agree with you that a smaller aperture is not necessarily better. What I miss in camera discussions is the quality of glass that the manufacturer is using. The discussion is only about sensor and aperture. Perhaps it would be nice if we could adjust the phone camera aperture size, software like. Then we could see which camera with a given aperture produces good pictures.
Certainly the lens is often the unknown or forgotten element in camera phones. Nokia has their Zeiss lenses and I’m a big fan of the Largan M8 sapphire lens on the Iuni U2 and Gionee E7 (neither of which were followed up), but apart from that the most we get is a 5p or 6p lens, blue glass filter, if we’re lucky and it’s true, often it’s not. The lens on the Vivo Xshot must be very good to distinguish it from the plethora of other IMX214 equipped, but largely disappointing models. Maybe that is also a decent Largan lens, I don’t know. 7 years ago Motorola brought out the Zine ZN5 in conjunction with kodak, from memory it used some sort of controllable bubble as a lens, the images it produced still aren’t beaten by the majority of phones today. We seem to go backwards in some respects whilst zooming forward in others.
Some sort of digital aperture would be great, perhaps a transparent layer using e-ink, if they could get a lens that then had an effective range from f1.6-F2.4 say, that could be really useful.
The dual camera setup on the new mid and top spec Qiku phones looks interesting, the first sensor a new 1/3.06″ IMX278 and the second a IMX214 of MONO type. The idea here is that the two should allow for some great low-light photography. I’ve yet to see the results though as the phones haven’t had much exposure outside China.

Mi4c is the clear winner imo, OPX comes in second and way behind that the Le 1s. OPX looks a little oversaturated though and the Le 1s looks too washed out.
Wooow. I really like the way Mi4c performs in low light. It turns out to be a great phone.
I sitll don’t like the Type-C connector and no SD slot (not a biggy with 32GBm but Mi4i had it!). I really am getting tired of 5,5in size of my Elife E7 and this Mi4c looks like something I’ve been waiting for.

really disappointed in LeTV’s performance
I disagree that OPX is better than LeTV. The pictures are a lot more Noisy and don’t look good at all at 100% détails.
But I agree that mi4c is far ahead of all of them. Quite impressive actually. Would be great to have this kind of test including the best camera phones out there (Samsung Galaxy and iPhone) to compare.
Give 1S one or two more updates, and camera firmware will be optimized. Letv releases weekly updates, so I have no doubts they will improve camera performance. For me, it’s more important that design and quality are without “bugs”, and software can be updated later.

it could be either a Sony IMX214 or a Samsung sonsor.
due to a limited stock of Sony sensors many manufacturers (Xiaomi, Samsung…) have opted on releasing their phones that could have one or the other sensor.
On Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note you can run a ISSD code that will tell you which sensor you’re using.
that code doesn’t work on Xiaomi phones and unfortunately i don’t know any other method than tear the phone apart.
unfortunately all linux shell commands don’t give you such information.
but this is not an issue since both sensor are comparable.

I wanted to post a comment about how the LeTV’s cam must’ve been dirty :p but in that case the ugly lens flares must be because of poor optical design, and no software update is going to fix that! Too bad that they’re already cutting corners just so they can save some cash on their second series of phones.
On the other hand, the xiaomi does look good! Just check these colors in the night shots, so nicely saturated!
