Snapdragon 618, 620 getting new names

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 618 and the 620 are now set to get new names.

The 618 and the 620 will respectively be called the Snapdragon 650 and the 652.

The reason why Qualcomm have decided to give these two SoCs new identities is to give a clearer idea of where the SoCs stand in terms of performance, etc.

Essentially, the the renaming will allow better distinguishability between other lower-end Snapdragon 600 series SoCs (615, 616, 617) and the ex-618 and ex-620.

Qualcomm-Snapdragon-650-and-652

Here’s what Qualcomm had to say about the renaming:

The renaming is to recognize the significant modem, processing, graphics, and camera advantages these two processors bring to the Snapdragon 600 tier. We’ve been developing the Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 processors over the last 12 months, and the superior capabilities and performance positions them well above other processors in this tier.

Gizchina News of the week

For example, the 4K Ultra HD video capture, playback and gaming experiences are unique for this tier, while the hi-resolution camera and 4G LTE experiences push the limits for this category. Although we prioritize user experiences over other measures, benchmark scores also carry weight and they, too, confirm the value in repositioning these two processors to properly reflect a higher position within the Snapdragon 600 tier.

At Qualcomm Technologies, we don’t take changes lightly, but we also recognize it’s important to ensure our processors are well understood by our customers and reflect both the performance and capabilities inherent in their design. With this new naming and positioning, the Snapdragon 600 tier continues to provide excellent mobile experiences and offers superior performance with leading technology and features, with the Snapdragon 652 and 650 leading the pack.

The Snapdragon 650 and the 652 come with on-board modems with LTE and Global Mode RF360 support.

4K recording on a mid-range soc is exciting stuff. Maybe even unprecedented.

Still up to each manufacturer to take advantage of it. The X10 which is more of an upper midrange SoC supported it but no one used it.

would it increase cost or are the manufacturers being plain clusmy ?!

It’s a number of factors, from software to hardware to consumer demand. 4K recording was actually possible as far back as 2013 it was just never really that popular until this year. 2016 you will see it being one of the “back of the box” features for phones. Like fingerprint sensor was this year and 64 bit was the year prior.

Correct me but the x600 has 4k recording

I wasn’t being literal with “no one”, I meant more most companies didn’t take full advantage of it. Just like it supports super slow motion but it isn’t really used at all.

Can’t deny that, the slow motion in the x600 is quite decent too, the should have marketed it better and as you said taken full advantage of those features seeing it’s supported by the SoC.

About a month ago, though for my mother and had a chance to try it out for three days. Honestly I enjoyed everything it offered (its os+bloatware excluded).

I have good news for you Muhammad. A few hours ago, Qualcomm made announcement that SD652 powered phone prices will be max. 99$ . Qualcomm named this dumping “Yasir Effect”. Thank you for your efforts.

just a question, whats your budget and what kind of phone do you want?

            • Muhammad Yasir
              December 22, 2015

budget is ballpark , around $160 (might increase to $180-$200 if i wait till around the end of semester , which is LATE May 2016) .
im looking at a decent camera , esp with a dual led/dual tone and PDAF (im looking for something which can snap decently at all times , since university lectures are easy to miss but hard to acquire later on and i will snapping vital course material quite often during the semester.)
and decent horsepower , as im avidly gaming every now and then and a handheld device is perfect for all times(and like every gamer , i hate lags) . which brings us to the screen , im a fan of huge 5.7″+ phones and a FHD panel , esp from Sharp, would be great. looking at 3GB ram and a 64 bit cpu so im not left out and behind , in terms of technology, come late 2016 . this might sound unusual , but im looking for phones with Dolby Atmos for some quality sound from the speakers.
since all this makes me a power user , a SD card slot is a must and the battery should be at least 3000+ mAh.(removable would be better) and last but not the least , a finger print scanner will do quite nicely … keeping all the pesky friends out 😀

i was originally looking at the Bluboo Xtouch (yes i know , screen size is puny compared to my standards :p) but reviews show that OIS has been lied about and hideous black borders inhibit its overall reputation … fingerprint scanner is a hit or miss as well.

so there you have it , barring any minor and meticulous details i may have missed out upon , there’s my budget and the type of phone im looking for. oh and im definitely not looking at something refurbished or used or else i would have gone for LG G3 which is available here for around $170-$185…

Redmi note 3 (3gb version) price is already “Yasir Effect”!

Hope they coming in 2016 and change the way midrange phones are with Snapdragon 615.

It should have been SD710 or 720 as the performance gap between SD615 and the new one is immense, so in reality it`s a new chip that`s much closer to SD820.

      December 22, 2015

      * EXCITED for new SD 650 and 650 phones , but hopes they will be cheap 😀 *

      • Steven Fox
        December 22, 2015

Not likely, as Qualcomm chip phones usually sell for allot higher than MTK offerings, even with the whole SD615/810 fiasco, people still believe that Qualcomm is allot more premium brand.
Since Samsung, HTC and Sony will be the first to deliver phones with those chips, don`t expect them to be cheaper than 300$.

          December 22, 2015

            December 23, 2015

Sorry, my friend, but a MTK P10 devices will come pretty cheap in a few months, you can get one of them. Performance will be more than enough if they go for FHD display, and not 2K.

              December 23, 2015

i know man … took it lightly , knowing the disdain Qualcomm smear all over themselves .
really hope we see something truly special and something that offers a genuine bang for the buck in the coming year !

speaking of P10 , how potent is it ?
