Video: Vivo Xplay5 full specifications and pricing

vivo xplay5

So the cat is finally out of the bag and Vivo have launched their latest flagship. Here are the full specifications and pricing of the Vivo Xplay5.

Not one but two Vivo Xplay5 phones have been announced today in Beijing. The flagship model boasts the 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 820 as rumours had pointed out, and the ‘base’ model get’s 4GB RAM, Snapdargon 652 and a slightly different HIFI arrangement.

Vivo Xplay5 design

Both variants of the Xplay5 feature the same curved 5.43-inch display and all metal body available in Gold or Pink. The full metal chassis is similar to other Vivo phones from the rear with the same fingerprint scanner and camera location as the Vivo X6 Plus.

vivo xplay5

Dimensions for the phone are 153.5 X 76.2 X 7.59mm, which is a good thickness for a phone sporting a 3600mAh battery.

vivo xplay5

A SIM tray is located in the left of the chassis (Yes, there is support for dual SIM cards), while a physical power and volume button are on the right. A 3.5mm headphone jack is found at the top of the phone, while a USB Type C is located in the base.

Vivo Xplay5 Specifications

Both phones feature the same curved Super AMOLED 2K display, they both also have the same 8 mega-pixel F2.4 front camera, and 16 mega-pixel Sony IMX298 rear camera with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus). The rear camera has an F2.0 aperture and features such as eye tracking, stabilistation is mentioned but it isn’t clear if it is software or hardware..

Screen Shot 2016-03-01 at 2.25.03 PM

The similarities between the two Vivo Xplay5 variants continue with the same 3600mah battery and dual engine charging (a quick charge feature), and parts of the HIFI audio equipment are the same too however the 4GB RAM version of the phone only has dual audio chips were as the 6GB RAM model has separate audio chips for left and right channels.

Where things are different are in the processors used and the amount of RAM. The flagship version of the Vivo Xplay5 has a Snapdragon 820 chipset and 6GB RAM where as the ‘entry-level’ model will have a Snapdragon 652 and 4GB RAM.

To keep the Vivo Xplay5 cool an innovative liquid cooling system has been designed in to the phone. The feature uses a special gel that can reduce the core temperature of the phone by up to 10 degrees.

Network support for both versions of the Vivo Xplay5 are as follows:Band38 / 39/40/41 (100M), Band 1 / 3, Band 2/4/5/7/8 (only supported international roaming). What this means is that anyone in China using a Chinese SIM is limited to bands 1 and 3 for FDD-LTE, while outside of China you have more LTE support options (we saw the same with the Oppo Find 7 when it launched.

Vivo Xplay5 Funtouch

OS on the Vivo Xplay5 is Funtouch 2.5.1 based on Android 5.1 and its a Chinese system with only support for Chinese and English, and no native Google support (however that can be fixed).

vivo xplay5 funtouch

As rumoured the system allow for split screen support allowing you to have 2 apps open on the screen at a time.

An interesting feature is that the Xplay5 will keep your most used applications loaded in to the RAM at all times meaning a faster load time. I assume won’t be affected by the task manager and would mean the phone learns which apps you use the most and keep them on standby.

Vivo Xplay5 Pricing

vivo xplay5 launch

Pricing isn’t cheap with the 6GB RAM version of the phone costing 4288 Yuan ($654) and the 4GB RAM model slightly less at 3698 Yuan ($564). So far it looks like Vivo have no plans to launch the Xplay5 outside of China, but we will keep you posted.

Keeping things in RAM will impact battery life . Noticed that the Mate 8 keeps a lot in the RAM too, compared to other high end devices.

Doesnt the mate 8 have excellent battery life?

        March 1, 2016

Nobody tests battery life properly so hard to say without owning it.
        http://www.anandtech.com/show/9878/the-huawei-mate-8-review/7

Clean tests like that are poor since in real life users leave apps on in RAM and they got a bunch of apps that use a lot of resources. FB got a lot of attention lately because some folks discovered that they get 15-20% longer battery life without the FB app but social, IM , news apps , things that have notifications, always check for updates, maybe send GPS location do drain a lot of resources. So it’s not just FB that drains the battery, a bunch of very popular apps are rather nasty.. There are other things too but lets not get into that now.

Oh i was going off reviews, users kept saying it was a good performer

I wasn’t saying it wasn’t good, just that i don’t own the device and don’t have good data.
It does have a big battery, a big screen but just 1080p and the SoC is staying cool so in theory it should have good battery life.

The Mate 8 would be real nice because of the 6 inch screen and the formfactor of an i6 Plus

I owned a mate 7 but hated the emui. Went back to funtouch and XPlay 3s

Battery life tests themselves are subjective to begin with. No two people use their phones the same way and everyone is located in different areas and have different signals/coverage. Two people with the same phone can have drastically different results.

I’m getting 6-7 hours SOT with moderate-heavy use and 8-9 hours light use. No optimizations and using FB lite app and mainly using wifi. Others on XDA have reported up to 9-10 hours SOT with the use of optimization apps.

I’m not doubting it has good battery life just saying battery tests aren’t the most reliable.

Gutted that this has such a small screen, completely killed my interest in it right there. Also surprised that the rest camera has an f2.0 aperture and no laser autofocus! Will have to look elsewhere now as this is the 2nd time this year that vivo have disappointed with a new release.

Oppo R9 should be the camera phone of 2016 (should be if my theory is correct)

Thanks for the tip, never get any mention on here although on paper the specs and price look good. The leagoo shark with a Helio x20 and hi-fi audio would be perfect.

Don’t worry I shall rise from the ashes to fight another day! It’s just incredibly disappointing when you’ve waited sooooo long for something to release only to find its not what you were expecting/hoping for. I feel that vivo have lost there way a bit as the xplay series really feels like it’s lost its identity.

I don’t own an letv! I’ve got a Meizu at the moment that I really like, except for the smaller screen as I really like the 6″+ form factor.

Funnily enough I was looking at it earlier, the only place I could find it for sale and not on pre order was on Aliexpress. Trouble is I hate their ROM, plus the fact that it’s dearer than the Huawei mate 8 which IMO is a much nicer looking phone. Think I will bide my time and see what materialises when the Helio X20 arrives

            • MaxPower
              March 1, 2016

            • realjjj
              March 1, 2016

LeTV Max Pro only sold 1k pre-production units at 2000CNY. Nothing else yet. Huawei will have a P9 Max and it seems that the P9 launch is next week.

Xiaomi kinda needs a Mi Note 2 but remains to be seen if they have it ready soon.

            • Rob
              March 2, 2016

Yes I read that too, all 1000 units were engineering samples. Wouldn’t be surprised if people bought these to sell on though. If the images of the p9 are correct it’s damn ugly so a definite no no for me. Xiaomi make the most boring phones on the planet so I know nothing they make will ever interest me.

Welcome to 2014, Vivo. Android Lollipop is calling you!

    • balcobomber25
      March 1, 2016

Guess I missed all the phones in 2014 with a SD820 and 6GB of RAM. Personally I would prefer a stable Lollipop (like Assefa says above me) than having Marshmallow just to say “we have the latest”.

      • Mi-fan
        March 1, 2016

The problem with android 5 is the ram leaking… even 6GB of ram wont completely fix that. Altough the curved screen is exactly what I expected from our dear Xiaomi so this Vivo phone might be my next device (Well goodbye username huh)

            • Assefa Hanson
              March 1, 2016

No, i was challenging your point that not even 6gb ram would be enough, thats just specualation there has nevr bee n a 6gb lollipop in the universe

I have my mi note pro with 4GB ram, and there problem exists even there, so I doubt that its gonna be any different with 6GB (propbably will take longer until all ram is gone, but thats it)

    March 1, 2016

Only availabe in gold or pink? What a fucking joke.

  9. March 1, 2016

For the given specs, this phone is competitively priced compared to the big boys outside China. However, for a typical Chinese phone it’s definitely a luxury item (though past Vivo phones weren’t exactly known for their value). I absolutely love that it’s not another phablet. Having used 5″, 5.2″, and 5.5″ phones the past couple years, I’ve come to the conclusion that a 5.43″ screen size would be just about perfect, although judging by the comments here I seem to be in the minority heh.

If the prices comes down and there’s an international version, this may be my next phone.

    • MaxPower
      March 1, 2016

Forget about international version and forget about price going down.
Resellers are still selling the Vivo XShot almost at the same price of launch.
For some reason Vivo’s price don’t drop like other brands

      • balcobomber25
        March 1, 2016

There actually will be an international version but it won’t be what people think. It will be for Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar and India. Essentially it will be the same phone with Google Play. I actually dropped by a Vivo store in Thailand the other day when I was there, the Xshot is still selling for over $300 there.

It’s time to get a smart TV.
I was interested into the one that LeTV launched before Xmas for the US market (I’ve been very close to buy it)

Then I started looking on reviews and people are struggling to install Google Play, Netflix and all those services that are not strictly Chinese.

There’s little reason they would use more power other than GPU driving the pixels. You still have the same brightness and activity area.

      • balcobomber25
        March 1, 2016

You have the same activity area with more pixels. The more pixels it has the more power it takes to light up those pixels and the more power it takes to achieve the same brightness.

$654.207USD hmm bad…it’s kind of an ugly phone too.

    • balcobomber25
      March 1, 2016

It is definitely ugly but that it is normal price for a Vivo, and if you ever own one they are worth every penny for the level of quality and fit and finish they offer.

Keeping things in RAM will impact battery life( in a negative way) . Noticed that the Mate 8 keeps a lot in the RAM too, compared to other high end devices, might become a trend.

    • Assefa Hanson
      March 1, 2016

Doesnt the mate 8 have excellent battery life?

    • realjjj

    • Assefa Hanson
      March 1, 2016

Oh i was going off reviews, users kept saying it was a good performer

    • balcobomber25
      March 1, 2016

Battery life tests themselves are subjective to begin with. No two people use their phones the same way and everyone is located in different areas and have different signals/coverage. Two people with the same phone can have drastically different results.

    • realjjj
      March 1, 2016

I wasn’t saying it wasn’t good, just that i don’t own the device and don’t have good data.
It does have a big battery, a big screen but just 1080p and the SoC is staying cool so in theory it should have good battery life.

I’m getting 6-7 hours SOT with moderate-heavy use and 8-9 hours light use. No optimizations and using FB lite app and mainly using wifi. Others on XDA have reported up to 9-10 hours SOT with the use of optimization apps.

Vivo xplay 5 supposed to look like this :

            • March 1, 2016

Everybody likes something else (not saying I like Xplay5). But there are another things – Samsung does suply front glass to Vivo for Xplay5. Different “curvy style” doesn’t make sense, right?

      > i rather buy real S7 […] for that price

fair enough, lots of people (millions in fact) will feel the same way. Samsung has a great name, with lots of custom software that non tech savvy people actually like. Specifically the software around their camera is very, very good, making their photography a best-in-the-business feature.

      > And this one is just midrange 6gb edition will be same expensive as S7

now you are just hating. it has the same processor, same screen, and in general superior specs to a S7 at the same price point.

Funnily enough I was looking at it earlier, the only place I could find it for sale and not on pre order was on Aliexpress. Yes I read that too, all 1000 units were engineering samples. Wouldn’t be surprised if people bought these to sell on though. The problem with android 5 is the ram leaking… even 6GB of ram wont completely fix that. Altough the curved screen is exactly what I expected from our dear Xiaomi so this Vivo phone might be my next device (Well goodbye username huh)

    • MaxPower

What’s the point of curved glass if you’re to also put such thick bezels? That’s bigger than most modern 5.5 inchers, IMO it looks kind of ugly (I suppose it was looks that lead them to that decision).

Apart from that (how needlessly bigger the device is) excellent hardware , easily the best hardware in 2016 (and it will probably be some time before it is topped, probably Note 6 in October).

It is definitely ugly but that it is normal price for a Vivo, and if you ever own one they are worth every penny for the level of quality and fit and finish they offer.

Yeah I love the specs, but the price and aesthetics are off for me.

Perfect phone for me. Quite expensive but price is still lower than the S7 or the latest Iphone. Specs wise it trounced those two too. But yes it’s not that very good to look at.

Everybody likes something else (not saying I like Xplay5). But there are another things – Samsung does suply front glass to Vivo for Xplay5. Different “curvy style” doesn’t make sense, right?

i wanted it to look like this as well, is there anyphone that has adopted this design yet?

    • realjjj

The idea of bending the edges is not Samsung’s, they were simply the first to implement it because nobody else had the screen tech.
Nothing else looks like Samsung, maybe the frame a bit.

      > i rather buy real S7 […] for that price

fair enough, lots of people (millions in fact) will feel the same way.

Kinda wish LG would turn this old concept into a product. A shorter upper bezel and a thinner body and would be just great as it is,clean and simple.

The idea to do this has been around long before anyone had the screen tech to actually do it.

You don’t seem to understand what an idea is.

Nobody has commented about the usb connection. The articles states USB Type C, but the photos and the video clearly show micro USB. Does it mean the Xplay 5 shown is a pre-production unit and the final units will have USB type-c, or does only the Xplay 5 Extreme have Usb type-c. Could someone clarify the type of connection on both the models.
