huawei p9 launched

Over in London today, Huawei launched the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus both with dual Leica cameras and Kirin 955 chipsets.

After months of speculation and waiting, the new Huawei P9 phones have finally been launched today at an even in London.

The even saw that there are in fact 2 Huawei P9 models, the regular Huawei P9 and the Huawei P9 Plus.

As rumours suggested the two phones both feature dual 12 mega-pixel Leica approved cameras on the rear, with the idea that one camera is used for sensing colour depth while the other camera specialises in monochrome pictures.

If you want a larger phone the Huawei P9 Plus has a 5.5inch Super AMOLED display, with 3400mAh battery and just a single memory option of 4GB RAM and 64GB memory.

The rest of the features are shared across all 3 variants of phones and include a 8 mega-pixel front camera, dual stereo speakers, fast charging, USB Type C and Marshmallow based EMUI 4.1.

Qiku was talking about a SD820 phone with dual cameras to be launched soon. Not sure where that has gone. Was reported here last month by Yash i think. It seemed to be a successor for Q Terra

I guess this will not have band 20, right? 🙁

Given they launched it in London there is a pretty good chance it will have it.

    • April 6, 2016

It will have all EU LTE bands. So yes, it will have B20 too.

Can’t wait to see this camera in reviews.

Depending the website and where in the world they exist I’d say almost, not quite as or similar but not better than the iPhone. Lol

iPhone has very good cameras due to excellent optimization. On my scale of 1-10, iPhone is usually around 8.5.

I agree they are good cameras. My point is everyone is partial to certain brands so we will never know how truly awesome these cameras will be unless we test them out ourselves.

This is true. Reviews are just someones opinion and can differ from person to person. But Andi I trust for camera reviews he is usually pretty spot on and Yash I trust for overall reviews as we tend to have similar likes/opinions in phones.

Yes. That is why I visit this site as well. I trust this site more than any other. Others usually stir up controversy in order to gain clicks for the website. This one is honest and survive just fine without having to depend on click bait articles and reviews.

Haha. I try to just give my honest opinions. I am a huge phone geek and probably have used over 200 phones. In my younger days I would buy a new phone every 3 months, then I got married lol.

I watched live updates from the launch event earlier and was disappointed that the ‘plus’ version is only 5.5″ and at its seriously overpriced price tag of €750/$860! Ouch no thanks Huawei.

    • April 6, 2016

So till searching for a perfect phone? 😀

      • Rob
        April 6, 2016

I’ve accepted the fact that I will have to wait till next year before any possibility of a 6″ phone arrives. The Chinese tablet market seems to have stagnated like the phone one at the moment, absolute nightmare.

        • April 6, 2016

I really get your point 🙂 I was decided to go for G5, but week ago I got S6 Edge 64GB for 250€ (hehe), like a new one, still 18 months in warranty. I thought it was my best buy but I can’t stand it. Got schizophrenia about my perfect phone atm :/ This crap will go to gf’s pocket soon I guess.

          • Rob
            April 6, 2016

2 of my mates have the s6 edge on contract and I can’t stand them, the curved screen is as pointless as curved tvs. They’re paying £100 a month between them for 2 years! My meizu and sim contact will only cost me £150 over 2 years and is a much nicer phone in my opinion and so much cheaper.

Not come across that one before, looks quite good with decent reviews and audio amp. The weight though at 242g is very heavy!

Anyone hear trying to decide between the Huawei P9 & the Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro. If so which one are you leaning towards ?

    • inkflow

Huawei has a way better quality! It’s a clear winner for me.

        April 6, 2016

        How is EMUI ?

      • balcobomber25
        April 6, 2016

I would say they are about even for quality but Xiaomi blows them away when it comes to software.

        • Babidi
          April 6, 2016

What? I have used both MIUI and EMUI and found that EMUI is more pleasing and at least for me more stable than MIUI.

          • Millet Air Purifier (Mi-Fan)
            April 7, 2016

EMUI is basically a MIUI clone

            • Babidi
              April 7, 2016

I still like the EMUI. I guess it is a matter of taste.

              April 7, 2016

Me too, but I like MIUI better as it has more features that i cant live without

          • balcobomber25
            April 7, 2016

EMUI is one of the worst ROM’s I ever used, Touchwiz is the worst. But everyone has their own likes and dislikes. And they don’t even come close to Xiaomi when it comes to updates. My P6 received about 4 OTA’s and one Android upgrade. I have a Mi3 which is still being updated.

            • Babidi
              April 8, 2016

I used the MIUI on Mi4 and probably because I came from Moto G I really hated MIUI. The next phone I bought had EMUI but by then I saw so many youtube vids with EMUI that I started liking it.

            • balcobomber25
              April 8, 2016

It’s probably because you came straight from pure Android. MIUI isn’t for everyone but it is much better than EMUI when it comes to updates/support.

There are many factors to consider, to be fair… First thing first, reviews: wait for the p9, and wait further to see how mi5 will improve through otas… Then, p9 will be available in every possible country, with warranty and all, while mi5 is a different thing as you should know… Then, price: p9 surely will have an higher initial price, but it will drop in a matter of time because of the official distribution, while resellers will keep mi5’s price as high as they can for many many months, so in a couple of months they will likely have a similar price…

But again: if you don’t compare how they behave, it’s impossible to choose

      • Simon
        April 7, 2016

Thanks for that. I’m waiting until August anyway, so all factors you mention as well as others will be considered 🙂

      April 6, 2016

They are both in contention for me but I am leaning more towards the Gionee S8 or Meizu Pro 6. But I am very curious to see how well this camera performs.

  7. April 6, 2016

That price killed it :)) 1,7 mm bezels – it’s so Huaweish. In reality, when u turn the phone on, there r going to be another 2mm black borders…

    • Assefa Hanson
      April 6, 2016

you sure about this? huawei’s flagships tend to have narrow bezel all around

      • April 6, 2016

        Yup, pretty sure 🙂 bit.ly/1PUeJCT 🙂

        • Assefa Hanson

I don’t really see the advantage of two cameras. Huawei already did it and it didn’t bring the expected results. The after focus was just a software trick, and today any phone can do it by taking two pics rapidly. Having a front camera with autofocus should be a better idea.
