Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu version is officially out

Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu

Even with the emergence of the new flaghship model Meizu Pro 6 the last generation is hardly out of steam and there is even a strong argument for Meizu Pro 5 being still the superior option. So it makes sense that the company is releasing even new version of the Pro 5.

Starting today the Meizu Pro 5 is going to be available in a pretty special Ubuntu edition, which is of course still a niche pick for the operating system, but for the enthusiasts it could be a pure nirvana. The phone is still packing extremely powerful hardware and thats not changing with the Ubuntu edition, so it’s still very appealing choice, but what about the price ?

We have a picture showing the Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu edition listing on the JD Mall for 369.99$, which would be a very competitive price even for the 32 GB version, but as of this moment i can’t find it anymore either on the chinese or international JD websites. But it exists so we have to hope it reappears there soon enough again.

      geeks, man, geeks…
They don’t spend money on clothes, don’t have any girlfriend to suck their purse (the one with coins inside hey, you perv), eat cheap pizzas and love anything with a penguin on it.
So hell yeah they’ll buy this $400 Ubuntu Pro 5 and waste countless hours trying to make its audio chip work.

I am a geek but I don’t fit into a single one of those categories and I plan on buying this device:

        1. I spend on money on clothes.
        2. I don’t eat pizza often, but I do eat at fine restaurants often.
        3. I have a wife.
        4. I love everything with a Penguin on it (you got one right).

This phone will be bought by people like me who have a stable job and enough disposable income that they can afford a secondary device that costs $400. I have used two Ubuntu phones so far and both worked right out of the box.

I was thinking a potential dual boot, it seems some guys got it right with the mx4

Or the other option is to buy the normal version and then flash it to ubuntu when you tired of the phone 🙂

I regret to have to tell you that you’re NOT a geek since you buy clothes. Except if you buy only clothes with penguins or Starwars characters. And by Starwars characters i mean only the true characters, which are Luke, Han, Yoda and Darth Vader (not this post-90’s nonsense)

As for the wife part, i admit a geek can have a wife. She only have to avoid brushes, perfumes and be able to sudo or play warcraft.

          OK OK i stop 😀
trying to do this John Cleese type humor, with enough disdain to seem serious but enough stupidity to be funny.

I noticed this review of it(Pro 5 Ubuntu) on GSM arena and thought you might be interested(provided you hadn’t seen it already :-))

Looks like it still needs a lot of work, but it should be cool to fiddle with.

That’s all Ubuntu phones, if you are not familiar with Ubuntu and using a terminal and if you need a lot of Apps they aren’t for you. But if you are familiar with Ubuntu they are really cool to mess around with.

I plan on spending $400 on a phone that runs Ubuntu. You would be surprised how many people will. I used one of the cheap BQ Ubuntu phones last year, the platform was excellent (especially Scopes), the phone was terrible.

It’s about having your own true linux system. That means mobile server in your hands. To some it also means mobile hack station.

        Also a mobile workstation.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this will support 4G in the U.S. No Miracast, either, so phone can’t be used as a computer, etc. Supposedly Ubuntu is working on Miracast but no idea when it will be available.

At $250 with support for 4G LTE in the U.S. and Miracast, I think I’d be interested.

The Ubuntu Touch is ultimately where I want to go. The problem with the Meizu range is they lack A/V over USB.

You have answered my question 🙂 For me an ubuntu edition needs a video out, I think most people(myself included) who are interested would definitely want that.

I always found it lacking my Mark Shuttleworth didn’t sponsor cash achievements for people to port Ubuntu Touch to qualifying phones. That way they’d get quick market uptake and scope.

I wonder if Meizu has considered releasing an Ubuntu phone with a mini HDMI, it would make almost no business sense(having to redesign the phone to incorporate it) but anyone buying it would want to have your babies.

As for me ,it is overpriced.
