Cherry Trail powered Voyo VBook V1 gets a 3G variant

Remember the Voyo VBook V1, a tablet that tried hard to be a laptop? The device is back again, but this time with a little extra in it.

To remind you of the specifications of this device, it comes with a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800p display and is powered by what is the most popular SoC in the Chinese tablet market right now — the Intel Cherry Trail Z8300 quad-core processor.

With that, the VBook V1 has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which makes it among the more usable tablets from China. Other specs include a 9000mAh battery and a 2 mega-pixel front-facing camera… and of course, the attached keyboard.

The screen can swivel around, Lenovo Yoga style.

The new addition is in the form of a 3G module, which will allow you to use your nano SIM card to access data on the hybrid tablet. The price difference is about $30, which makes the 3G powered variant sell for $238.

Unfortunately though, there’s no 4G support. Supported bands include GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz and WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz, so you can expect 3G speeds at best.

This is even worse than the original with a super low res screen, ultra slow cherry trail and quite a bit more expensive just for 3g compatibility. There are a lot better tablets out there for less money.

I want to get a 3g enabled tablet but I have no idea where to start, I don’t know anything about tablet SoC and so on.

Which one would you recommend me?

What exactly are you after? Windows, android or dual boot? Price range and screen size? Stylus support? Etc… I just bought the cube i9, gonna do the heat sink mod and install remix os so I will have dual boot and full android experience. The teclast P98 4G is really nice with the MT6752 clocked at 2ghz, super fast, lovely IGZO display and a battery that lasts forever. Also having lte on board is even better. Like I said it’s hard to recommend anything without knowing what your after.

I really don’t care of Windows anymore: i use Android and Debian only now, so Android I guess.

          Price…I really don’t know…is $300 enough for a 3G/4G enabled tablet?

Screen from 8 to 10″ (below 8″ is too small and above 10″ is too bulky)

          I’ve never used a stylus so I guess I don’t need it.

          That MT6752 caught my attention!

There’s the Teclast P98 4G I mentioned for under $200 or the 3G version with the Allwinner A80T for around $150.
There is also the Teclast x98 plus 3G which has the atom z8300 (entry level) dual boot (same tablet as above) again around $200.

The Huawei Mediapad M2 for around $260 if you prefer something around 8″. The Cube T8 ultimate but for some reason cube partitioned the hard drive but you can alter this if your technically minded as the 2GB they give you to install apps on is a joke.

If you want cheap and cheerful there is the Voyo Q901HD for around $100 with the MT6735 so again 4G but low res screen. There are a couple of cheap colorfly tablets and loads of no-name rubbish ones too. Of course I’ve ignored all the rubbish from Onda as they tend to be horrifically bad and not something you would want to own.

I think I’ll go with the P98 Mediatek version.
              Thanks for your help Rob

No problem Max. I bought my friend it 10-12 months ago when it was first released and its never been switched off and they use it constantly, it does have one issue that plagues almost all Chinese tablets though and that is the speaker volume isn’t fantastic. I have installed MTk tools and increased the speaker volume which helped a little bit but could still be louder, gonna try another program to boost it tomorrow. This is a common problem amongst all Chinese tablets that needs to be addressed as they are a few years behind the phone manufacturers in many regards.

              Is there a 3G z8500 tablet?

No. There are only 4 tablets that I know of with the z8500 and I’ve owned one of them. The trouble is that the atoms don’t have modems built into them. There are a few dual boot ones that have a 3g module added to them but they only work on android since there is no 3g support in windows.
