OPPO R7s gets Android Marshmallow, courtesy Project Spectrum

Remember Project Spectrum, i.e. OPPO’s effort to bring the near-stock Android experience to its phones? Well, it’s now bearing fruit. The OPPO R7s is on the receiving end this time.

The phone gets an Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based ROM under Project Spectrum. What this means is that owners of the device no longer have to wait for ColorOS to update to Android 6.0 before getting a taste of Marshmallow.

In OPPO’s words, ‘Project Spectrum is an official alternative to OPPO’s ColorOS, offering a near-stock Android experience while preserving some of the best-loved features of ColorOS.’

Gizchina News of the week

The Marshmallow ROM for the OPPO R7s will be available for download to users starting May 13. A beta version of the ROM can however be downloaded right away from the OPPO forums.

Android M brings a few new features to the R7s, including:

1. Doze Mode
The Android M doze mode helps improve battery performance during standby which ensures better battery life

2. Now On Tap
Android M allows you to search whenever you want, in any interface tap and hold the software home button (needs to be enabled in display settings) to search for related info.

3. New Launcher
The new Android M launcher enables you to find apps with a scroll bar, which highlights the app starting with a specific letter

…and more.

With less than two weeks to go for the stable release, it might be a good idea to wait unless you’re feeling adventurous today.

Cool! I prefer stock Android over the bloat most of the OEMs bake into their devices. I hope others will follow suit.
