Meizu m3 note Hands On: It’s like the Redmi Note 3 all over again…

Meizu’s been launching a few phones this year, and one of them happens to be the new, budget focused m3 note.

DSC_0852_result

The phone comes with a decent set of specs for a device costing just 799 Yuan in China (for the 2GB version, which we’re testing as well; check international pricing here). Now that we’ve had a chance to play with it for a few hours, we can tell that it doesn’t just look good, but is fairly well made as well.

If you’ve ever held a Redmi Note 3 in your hands, the m3 note will ring a few bells. To not put it mildly, it is eerily similar… almost creepily.

That said, Meizu loyals will argue that it was the Redmi Note 3 ripped off the MX5 in the first place. Ugh.

Anyway, coming back to the m3 note. Despite the similarities, its quite a good looking phone. Meizu phones have almost never disappointed with their looks. They now don’t have the once-popular halo around the home button, but Meizu’s rather subdued sense of styling persists and pulls it off nonetheless.

Like almost every phone being made today, the m3 note is all metal. We have the silver version of the phone, which actually has two shades of the colour on the back of the phone, with the extremes a tad darker than the main body.

Gizchina News of the week

Thankfully though, the m3 note does not have ugly black borders under the digitiser. Instead, its a pure white, modest border around the display.

The chin features two sets of holes, one of which are for the speaker audio to let out, and the other, the mic.

I haven’t spent too much time with the phone, but for a 799 Yuan phone, the device has a decent camera with a nice dynamic range, especially when compared to more expensive phones.

The display is fairly impressive too, especially with a fluid UI that comes with the Flyme OS.

Meizu’s mTouch is a charm. I’m personally a huge fan of how Meizu arrange the fingerprint sensor, home button and the back button — all in one hardware key. In my books, it’s great design — remembering a gesture (in this case at least) can be easier than having to learn button locations.

According to the product listing, the phone weighs 163 g, but to me it feels somewhere around the 180+ g range. Only if I had a weighing scale handy!

I hope I’m not speaking too soon, but the m3 note hardly feels like a $120 phone. Of course there are faults that we’ll find through the days of usage, but the first impressions are positive!

Battery life should be one of its strengths given the SoC and the battery size so maybe give that some extra attention. Curious to see what you get.

I’ve already seen a review down at gizchina. it: battery life is fairly good! Not on the redmi note 3 pro’s level, but still within a day of use you can get more than 5 hours of sot under 4g (with all the social media possible, bt and navigator always on) and more than 8 hours with a stress use under wifi… And that was with an early firmware release, probably the sw now is even better

“I understand that everybody has to eat… therefore the sharesale link.”

Precisely. Shareasale or not, you’d have to pay the same price.

About the price being off from the 799 Yuan Chinese price, well, I can’t help it (nor can Andi or anyone else here). Let’s just wait and hope it’s mistake and that it changes when the phone is in stock. I’ll have a word with them.

Meanwhile if there’s anything you want to know about the phone, feel free to ask 🙂

Someone already commented on this and I know it is very difficult but quoting the Dollar price in China just seems wrong. People new to following this stuff will go geez what a bargain, this thing is in the same price range as the Vernee Thor, Umi Rome and the like.None of us following this site can get it at that price(unless you live in China). Its like the Rome and the Thor, virtually all the articles on here pushed those as $100 phones. At the time of release I couldn’t find the Rome for under $130(I see you can get it now for $120) .The Thor is currently selling for $120 and up. As I said I know its difficult, but it just seems like you guys are purposely quoting the Chinese prices for the wow factor

    • Angry Mobile Nerd
      May 21, 2016

I don’t see anything wrong with using the manufacturers MSRP. It’s fair, standardized, and informative. Whose price are they suppose to use, exactly? When a phone gets launched they’re suppose to wait for the resellers to announce their pricing first before publishing prices? Well then people will just start going to another site. And it what currency? USD? Euros? Rupees? I suppose whatever is most convenient for you, right?

      • Tremaine Underwood
        May 21, 2016

If you follow phones like you, me and these guys do it isn’t very hard to predict what resellers should sell them at. In fact most commenters here say between $30 – $50.This can vary heavily between ressellers, but it is still better than this. They would tell me in Rand, but if you weren’t trying to make a stupid irrelevant point, you would realise that the currency doesn’t matter. They are quoting a price in China before international mark up, they could tell us the value in Monopoly money, but we still couldn’t buy it outside of china for that price. Saying wow a $100 phone with FHD 5.5 inch screen with 6753, when you actually can’t buy it for that, seems like a wow factor pull.

        • Angry Mobile Nerd
          May 21, 2016

I still think using the MSRP is still the best route. It educates consumers what the real price is. By using reseller prices not only are you supporting reseller pricing, but some people might end up paying even more then they need to. If MSRP is $70 but gizchina uses the $100 reseller price instead there will be lots of misinformed readers thinking $100 is in fact the MSRP so when they find a reseller selling for $115 they might be quick to buy thinking its only $15 over retail when in fact its $55. Manufacturers might also be less inclined to cooperate with this site if they always skew the pricing, too. Yes grey markets exist be you seldom see (read: never) reputable technology sites actively marketing grey market pricing.

        • balcobomber25
          May 22, 2016

I hardly ever do this but I have to agree with Angry Bird on this one. The only fair and consistent pricing information to give is the MSRP. It is the same in all industries, MSRP is always quoted even if stores are selling it for more or less money. Reseller prices can vary greatly with a markup of anywhere between 10-60%. For instance right now you can find the Thor from as little as $115 to as much as $230 depending on the website.

But not all brands have pricing exlcusive to just China. Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo/OnePlus, Huawei/Honor, Lenovo, ZTE/Nubia, Gionee and several others are sold officially in many countries around the world. This site attracts visitors from numerous countries including some that actually live in China. They could quote reseller price ranges but even that wouldn’t be accurate as the prices change and fluctuate almost daily. Yesterday on Kimovil the lowest you could buy a Thor for was $118, today it’s $115 tomorrow it might be $117. MSRP gives consistency.

          • Tremaine Underwood
            May 22, 2016

I get that they range greatly in price from resellers, I never meant give an exact price. An example was with the Le 2 review I saw at the other site we follow where the reviewing called it a sub $200 phone. For me that’s more accurate even though its not accurate at all 🙂 I don’t have a problem with quoting the Yuan price especially at launch since the resellers haven’t listed them yet. But here saying this doesn’t feel like $120 dollar phone, well thats because it isn’t. Anyway I will concede and say its my personal preference 🙂

    • May 23, 2016

Phones like the Meizu m3 note, Xiaomi Mi Max, etc. and ones that you mention such as the UMi Rome, Vernee Thor, etc. fall in completely different leagues. The first set of phones have a definite MSRP, and they are sold for that much. On the other hand, the second set of phones here (i.e., UMi Rome, et al) have prices that fluctuate more than the tides of the Indian Ocean. These are merely ‘export brands’ with a limited manufacturability, and thus any change in the market has a much larger effect on the price of these phones.

799 Yuan is the price Meizu sell the m3 note for, and if you are in China you can actually purchase the phone for that much. On the other hand, the UMi Rome, Vernee Thor are phones made specifically for international audiences. Note: all phones mentioned here are Chinese phones but there’s still a huge difference.

  8. May 21, 2016

I like Meizu’s UI a lot – tried and liked the M2 Note and the Pro 5. My only reservation with the M3 Note is the processor. Not sure how much of a step up the P20 is from the MT6753. The P20 is MT6755 so only a bit up, on paper, from MT6753. I found this processor to be a bit slow and laggy on the M2 Note.

    • Tremaine Underwood
      May 21, 2016

      P10 🙂

Sorry, yes, I meant P10, thanks.

        • Tremaine Underwood
          May 21, 2016

No worries, I agree. From the reviews I have seen of theP10 and even the X20 being laggy with Asphalt 8(a nearly 3 year old game) on high is a little disappointing. Hopefully it just a case of new roms not being fully optimized yet.

          • Joel Adames
            May 21, 2016

Well to keep in mind, Asphalt 8 is constantly updating and growing as an app and so do many other current (but old apps) I have a game that when released I had and Mtk 6592 SoC device and it would run it ok, but the App it self as updated several times. At time of 1st download it was 0,5gb size today is 2,3gb size you get the idea now.

            • Tremaine Underwood
              May 21, 2016

I agree with that, but that doesn’t fully explain it :-). I have the game with the latest updates on my M1 Note(6752) and it hardly lags at all on high settings and if it does it is way less than the review videos of the M3 Note I have seen. They looked unplayable. The X20 also lagged in the review video I saw, a lot less but according to the reviewer still noticeable. The point isn’t that game specifically. Its the future proofness 🙂 of the gpu in there. Games come out constantly and get better graphically, but these latest chips seemed to have taken a backwrds step or at least stayed about the same.

            • Joel Adames
              May 21, 2016

Well to be honest yes you are rigth. But then again, I’ve noticed that some games tend to cut features depending on which device environment they are. For example that same game on my 2k 6″ display looks so nice and crisp and perfect and then on my friend’s 5.5″FHD phone is lower stuff you could almost think the game shrunken the graphics just because it but then in my phone (Mtk X10) it doesn’t lags either… so we get to think WTH ?!

            • Tremaine Underwood
              May 21, 2016

Yup WTH?! :-). Ag, it could all just be a case of new rom/chip combo that hasn’t been optimised yet. Meizu are really good at optimisation so hopefully that will sort it out.

              May 22, 2016

Better get last year, or the year before flagship. My Xperia Z2 still performs better than current mid ranges. Forget Antutu, it’s the real world performance that counts. And it has Marshmallow if latest Android version is your thing. (I’m still on Kitkat and completely fine with it)

            • MattD
              May 21, 2016

That’s it: the apk downgrade graphic according to the resolution… Otherwise, how could you reproduce 2k images on a fhd screen?! xD

I’m considering buying le 2 with x20 or vivo x3max with sd652 or redmi note 3 with sd650. Cheapest is redmi note 3, le 2 came in second with +10$ and vivo with +100$ over le 2. Im liking vivo or le 2. Redmi note 3 is good but the memory use was a problem to mee since i usually open a lot of tab amd apps and hate reloading. Is x20 that bad? How is it compared to sd652 or x10. M1 metal around the same prize as redmi note 3.

            • Tremaine Underwood
              May 21, 2016

I think the x20 has very good cpu cores.Which means general performance and app usage should be good.It should out perform your other options in those areas. I was talking purely about the gaming performance(and high end at that). For general gaming it should also be more than enough. The chip is fairly new so there is a good chance that updates will help. I would personally probably go with the Le, its the best value for money(I think). Keep in mind it doesn’t have a 3.5 mm earphone jack a convertor is needed(I think it comes in the box though). I haven’t personally used a Vivo, I just cn’t see what an extra $100 gets you :-). I am curious though, the Note 3, are you sure that isn’t the X10 verson? I haven’t seen it for cheaper than the Le2. Check Kimovil for prices.

            • Ian Doyle
              May 21, 2016

I consider vivo also because it got extra 1gb ram and another two cores of a72. But yes, I’m thinking le 2 probably a good choice. High clock speed also for single core. The redmi note 3 I mention here is the sd650 version. Officially sold in my country. Thats why cheaper price. Le 2 was import. How about gpu on le 2? In par with at least adreno 510 on redmi note 3.

            • Tremaine Underwood
              May 22, 2016

Don’t get me wrong from what I understand Vivo’s are very good phones, for myself I couldn’t justify the extra money :-). I researched the the t880 vs 510 because I had the idea they were on par but wanted to make sure. From most of the comments I have read and Antutu’s 3d score they seem pretty much on par. Here is an article where it shows both the scores:

              https://www.gizchina.com/2016/01/21/mediatek-helio-x20-benchmarks-revealed/

Keep in mind with the screenshot with the antutu scores for the X20 you need to add the 2 3d scores together to get the combined score 5627 + 8299 = 13926 Vs 16471(650). I hope this helps

Kimovil says there are 3 colour variants, not sure if they are all available yet:

              Gold

Which paper was this? The 6753 and 6752 are essentially the same chip with three key differences:

        – 6753 is clocked lower
        – 6753 has a world modem that supports China’s CDMA 2000 networks.
        – 6753 has a Mali T720, 6752 had a Mali T760.

Yes grey markets exist but you seldom see (read: never) reputable technology sites actively marketing grey market pricing.

Well, on paper the 6753 was supposed to be a little upgrade over 6752, and then… We found ourselves stick with that sticky 6753 for an year and half praying to go back to 6752 xD

    • balcobomber25
      May 22, 2016

Which paper was this? The 6753 and 6752 are essentially the same chip with three key differences:

      – 6753 is clocked lower
      – 6753 has a world modem that supports China’s CDMA 2000 networks.
      – 6753 has a Mali T720, 6752 had a Mali T760.

Here is an article where it shows both the scores:

      http://www.gizchina.com/2016/01/21/mediatek-helio-x20-benchmarks-revealed/

Keep in mind with the screenshot with the antutu scores for the X20 you need to add the 2 3d scores together to get the combined score 5627 + 8299 = 13926 Vs 16471(650). I hope this helps

      May 22, 2016

I was purely talking about moose’s reference about the number code: just like 6755 is just slightly higher than 6753, the latter was slightly higher than 6752… But that didn’t meant any improvement at all in the chip itself!

    • Tremaine Underwood
      May 22, 2016

Kimovil says there are 3 colour variants, not sure if they are all available yet:

      Gold
      Rose-Gold(pink :-))
      Silver

    • CrazyHorse
      May 22, 2016

Only saw pink here. Other colors not yet available. Btw, I saw some refurbished lg g4 for the same price as le 2. Should I go for it?

It took me a while to settle for my phone before this. I usually use one until it wears or it can’t cope with my usage anymore.

Better get last year, or the year before flagship. My Xperia Z2 still performs better than current mid ranges. Forget Antutu, it’s the real world performance that counts. And it has Marshmallow if latest Android version is your thing. (I’m still on Kitkat and completely fine with it)

Yep, qihoo 360 started a join venture with coolpad about 1 year ago to push their services in china… They did not had the rush letv had, but so far they’ve made a couple of interesting phones and this n4 is getting tons of attention because its particularly low price for the specs!
