LG’s first true flagship for the year is here, and like we reported before now, it is dubbed the LG G7 ThinQ, and contrary to our expectation, the flagship is not pronounced LG G7 “think”, but rather LG G7 “than queue” to which the natural response is “You’re welcome.” The notched LG G7 ThinQ got all it takes to take on other flagship devices so far released in 2018 including the Galaxy S9 duo. With the G7 ThinQ, LG is focusing on delivering the brightest display, the loudest sound and the most powerful AI Cam on any smartphone. The device is rated IP68 for the ingress of dust and water while also meeting the MIL-STD 810G requirements.
Starting off with the design, the LG G7 ThinQ is encased in a metal frame and with a Corning Gorilla glass 5 back which allows for wireless charging. It got a centrally placed dual rear camera in a vertical arrangement, as well as a rear fingerprint sensor, but unlike the G6, the G7 fingerprint sensor does not double as the power button but instead opt for a standalone power button. The volume rocker alongside a dedicated hardware that summons the Google Assistant sits on the left side. Double tapping on the hardware button also summons the Google lens.
The device incorporates an iPhone X like notch, which LG prefers to call the “New Second Screen” within the Settings menu. And like the Huawei P20, LG is LG says users can play around the notch by either by expanding it to minimize the bezels, highlight it by changing the notification bar to a different color, or render the notification bar completely black, thereby giving it the appearance of a conventional phone.
The G7 ThinQ offers an almost all screen front with a notch design at the top and a bottom bezel that is quite thinner than that of the LG G6. The G7 ThinQ features a 6.1-inch FullView Super Bright LCD display offering a brightness of a brightness of up to 1,000 nits and a 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut, which makes it suitable for use under direct sunlight. The display offers a resolution of 3120×1440 and aspect ratio of 19.5:9.
Gizchina News of the week
Like we highlighted earlier, LG is giving special reference to the G7 sound output, the G7 ThinQ comes fitted with a Boom Box stereo speaker setup, complete with DTS-X, and with that, LG claims the G7 ThinQ is not only louder than most other phones but has deeper bass as well.
Moving on to the camera configurations, the G7 ThinQ camera is an improvement over the G6 rear and front cameras. The device comes with a pair of 16MP shooters with a 71-degree field of view and a super wide 107-degree. The primary shooter comes with a f/1.6 lens with OIS, phase detection, laser autofocus, while the secondary shooter is a fixed focus lens with a dimmer f/1.9 lens. And much like the LG V30S ThinQ, the G7 ThinQ comes with intelligent AI features that automatically scans objects in the environment to determine optimal settings while also adjusting brightness in low-light conditions.
The G7 ThinQ come with some camera features which shouldn’t go unmentioned: there is the live Photo mode that records one second before and after the shutter is pressed, stickers that use face recognition to generate 2D and 3D overlays, and a Portrait mode that generates professional-looking shots with out-of-focus backgrounds.
Like most other flagship devices, the G7 ThinQ uses the familiar 2.8GHz octa-core Snapdragon 845, while the memory starts at 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM for the regular model, and 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM for the G7+ ThinQ, and are both expandable using microSD slot.
Powered by a 3000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and Wireless charging, the G7 ThinQ boots Android Oreo out of the box with a promise of prompt update to Android P, and retains the all-important 3.5mm jack.
The device is available in New Platinum Gray, New Aurora Black, New Moroccan Blue, and Raspberry Rose color options and it is expected to hit the shelves in the coming days first in South Korea followed by major markets in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Pricing details are yet to be announced, but there are indications it will cost about the same as the LG G6.
