Samsung’s New Patent Details Self-Regenerating Oleophobic Coating

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung has patented a self-regenerating oleophobic coating with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). Oleophobic coating is nothing new when it comes to the smartphone industry. It is an oil-repellant coating that is applied on a fingerprint-prone surface. By allowing oil to not be absorbed, oleophobic coating makes a surface fingerprint resistant. It is used across industries, from smartphone to medical.

Since most phones are now made of glass both on the front and the back, oleophobic coating allows for smudge resistant touch surfaces. The South Korean manufacturer has been using glass extensively in its smartphones, making them highly susceptible to fingerprint smudges and scratches over time. Samsung’s patent details a new type of oleophobic coating that would provide better protection against fingerprints over time.

Another application of the self-regenerating oleophobic coating would be on flexible screens or foldable smartphones. A normal coating would wear off over time with use but Samsung’s patented tech might last longer. These are mere speculations as far as the future of the tech is concerned. Samsung has been rumoured to launch a foldable smartphone early next year. So there is a possibility that we will get to see the new oleophobic coating in action.
