Why Doesn’t the Surface Pro 6/Laptop 2 Have a USB-C Port?

A few days back, Microsoft updated its Surface line and brought a number of new products to the market. Among them, the Surface Pro 6 and the Surface Laptop 2 are equipped with Intel’s latest eight-gen processors that are said to have a performance improvement of 85%. If taking into account the fact Windows OS is developed by Microsoft, there is every reason to think the new Surface products will show a tough competition to all other PC makers and not only. However, it is regrettable that these devices are still not equipped with USB-C ports. Lance Ulanoff recently successfully interviewed Panos Panay from Surface Design Department, who gave a corresponding explanation about this issue.

But Panos’ explanation is not satisfactory. According to Panos Panay, adding a USB-C port means removing the full-size USB-A port. In the interview, Panay pointed to the USB port on Surface Pro 5 and said, ‘I’m not taking that away.’

This year’s Surface product design has not been significantly changed. Panos said: ‘Because, if we had to redesign the product every year, then obviously, we haven’t made a great product. What would I be chasing?’

Since the USB-C port is already used on the Surface Studio 2, Surface Go, and Surface Headphones, Panos admits that this is only a matter of time. He said: ՛We’re gonna be methodical, calculated, and take our time, be patient and make sure we’re bringing the right products to market at the right time but also with great quality and innovation.՛

Of course, there is a grain of truth in his words. But it isn’t a satisfactory explanation for common users, who want to see more useful features on every product.
