A few hours ago, we saw some images that revealed more about what the next smartphone from Oppo might look like. While it was revealed that the Oppo R19 will get a new screen technology with almost 100% STB ratio and embedded dual cameras, the latest scoop from the rumor mill suggests the device might be powered by Mediatek’s next SoC.
Much like Qualcomm, MediaTek is reportedly working on an upper mid-range SoC which is expected to drive some mid-range devices tipped for 2019 release. The SoC already appeared in a benchmarking tool, and from what we reported a few days back, the performance only stood a little short of Qualcomm’s highly expected flagship SD 8150.
Gizchina News of the week
While the SD 8150 is expected to first debut with the Galaxy S10, we now have it on record that Oppo could be the first to use the Mediatek Helio P80 SoC. Specifically, Oppo next device in the R series – the Oppo R19 could be the first device to be powered by the SoC.
The Helio P80 is expected to be built on the TSMC’s 12nm process with greatly improved AI performance and probably improved CPU/GPU architecture. A look out the image posted here, the Helio P80 is rated as a better AI performance than Huawei Kirin 980, even though the former is a mid-range SoC. We aren’t sure if this can be sustained in real life usage, so we might have to chill till the P80 finds its way to any of the devices.
The Helio P80 will be MediaTek’s main product for the first half of 2019, and presumably, the R19 will debut in early 2019
