Qualcomm is expected to present its next top-range chipset for the smartphone market between December 4 and 6 at the Snapdragon Technology Summit.
A new report from PCMag states that the word “SM8150” that so far has indicated this new processor in the benchmarks is nothing but an internal identification name and therefore does not correspond to the name that will be used publicly.
It would not be the first time for a change of name within the line of Qualcomm processors, now composed of the series 200/400/600/700/800, and previously the S1 / S2 / S3 / S4.
The name could then follow the current numbering and the chip can be called Snapdragon 855 or the company could decide to turn again from what we are used to. It could start with a 5, since it will be the first chip with integrated 5G modem (X50), and maybe call itself Snapdragon 5000 … “. A change is plausible not only for the new connectivity (or the new architecture at 7nm) but also for the unusual configuration of three core clusters that has appeared on the net in recent days.

The same fate, according to the report, should also be followed by “SM8180”, which seemed to be the definitive name of the new chip designed specifically for Windows.
For what it’s worth, prolific Twitter leaker and WinFuture editor Roland Quandt clarified on Twitter he never claimed Snapdragon 8150 was anything more than a codename, also lending some credence to separate gossip about the not-so-distant arrival of the “SDM865”, aka “SM8250”, and “SDX55”.
A Snapdragon 865 SoC with an integrated X55 5G modem could see daylight as early as Q3 2019, suggesting like the Exynos 9820, the SD 855 (aka SD8150) will be limited to 4G LTE connectivity after all.
