Yesterday, Qualcomm announced the new Snapdragon 855 SoC which supports 5G networks and today, Xiaomi has announced the first smartphone with this SoC, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G Version. MediaTek has now joined Qualcomm in the 5G field. Today, MediaTek’s first 5G multi-mode integrated baseband chip, Helio M70, was released in Guangzhou, China.

MediaTek Helio M70 supports 5G key technologies and is a stand-alone 5G baseband chip that enables faster connection speed, lower power consumption, and a better reference design to create a high-speed network experience in the 5G era. According to the official introduction, MediaTek Helio M70 will be shipped in 2019. The Helio M70 is designed in accordance with 3GPP Rel-15 5G new air interface standards, including support for stand-alone (SA) and non-independent (NSA) network architectures. It supports sub-6GHz bands, high power terminals (HPUE) and other 5G key technologies. In addition to the sub-6GHz band, MediaTek’s 5G solution will also support the millimeter wave band to meet the needs of different operators.
Yesterday, Qualcomm President, Cristiano Amon, announced the list of vendors that will launch 5G smartphones using Qualcomm’s chip next year. The list includes ASUS, Fujitsu, Google, HMD (Nokia), HTC, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE and other little-known OEMs. Although MediaTek did not list the manufacturers to use the Helio M70, the likes of Meizu and Smartisan is conspicuously missing from Qualcomm’s list.
