The next OnePlus smartphone could arrive with wireless charging

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is a group of companies with the aim of developing and promoting the Qi wireless charging standard.

Some of the members are Apple, Samsung, Huawei, ZTE, Panasonic and Sony. Now Oppo has joined the organization, which indicates that possibly the future smartphones of Oppo and OnePlus will have Qi wireless charging.

Since being part of the consortium is a requirement for the creation of devices using Qi wireless charging, none of the current or past Oppo phones have Qi support. The company filed a patent for a 15W wireless charging technology last year, but so far it has not appeared in any product.

Oppo and OnePlus operate under the same parent company and often share technology and resources with each other, so Oppo’s participation could mean that the OnePlus 7 (or another future model) will have Qi load.

OnePlus is expected to introduce a 5G phone this spring that will feature a new design and branding. CEO Pete Lau has said that this device will be launched before the end of May. We also expect to see the OnePlus 7 released around the same time. Last month, we showed you a photo of Lau holding a prototype that could be the OnePlus 7. Also in the same image, you can see that same prototype projected on a screen while a OnePlus employee is making a point about the phone. Either upcoming phone, or both, could feature wireless charging.
