Every smartphone maker has at least one model that embodies the company’s philosophy, showcases its intentions in the market, and is designed to struggle against other brands. It’s called ‘the annual flagship’. As for Xiaomi, it’s the traditional Mi series models that have been considered to be the most cost-effective models on the market. Though recently, Honor, Meizu, and Hammer have launched smartphones with identical configurations and at lower price tags, the Chinese Apple has been doing for a few years. So it’s always expected what new features the next-gen Mi annual flagship will come with. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi 9 is no exception. Today, Lin Bin, Xiaomi co-founder and president, was asked by Weibo users to provide some information concerning the forthcoming model. And though he refused them, there are a few features we are waiting to see on it.
First, prior to this Lei Jun, Xiaomi Technology founder and CEO revealed that ‘the Xiaomi Mi 9 will come with an improved fast charging option’. In fact, there are already a few models supporting way faster charging than our protagonist. Among them, we can mention the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Honor Magic 2, OPPO Find X, OPPO R17 Pro, etc. So most likely, the Mi 9 will support something like this.

Second, it’s assumed the Xiaomi Mi 9 will support wireless charging. Currently, there are a few Xiaomi phones supporting this option (Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s, Mi MIX 3, etc.), but none of them belongs to the ‘traditional annual flagship’ category. If the Xiaomi Mi 9 supports wireless charging, then it will become the first phone of the original Mi series to come with such a feature.
Third, Lin Bin has also shown the wide-area screen fingerprint unlocking technology. The screen fingerprint unlocking area reached 25mm×50.2mm, which is many times larger than the mainstream smartphone FOD unlocking area on the market. Basically, you can unlock it without looking at the screen. There is every reason to think this technology may debut with the Xiaomi Mi 9.
At last, a few days back, two Xiaomi models (M1903F2A and M1902F1T/A) got a radio transmission certification. It’s assumed they refer to the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE, respectively.
