Samsung’s OLED display panel faces more competition

A few years ago, Samsung was the sole supplier if OLED displays but now, more LCD panel suppliers has commenced mass production of OLED screens for smartphones. Taiwanese LCD maker, IC manufacturers, are also preparing to expand their market share in the OLED panel market by 2019.

According to sources, Chinese panel suppliers such as BOE and Tianma continue to increase their OLED panel production, and LG Display OLED panel sales accounted for more than 10% of the total OLED panel revenue. In addition, Sharp has launched an OLED panel production line for mobile phones. Sharp hopes to enter the iPhone supply chain in the future.

Furthermore, AUO, another display manufacturer may also cut into the Android phone supply chain to provide OLED panels. According to industry insiders, OLED panels have long been dominated by Samsung, but this year Samsung will face multiple competitive pressures. Since smartphone manufacturers will launch mid-range models using OLED screens in 2019, Samsung’s “expensive” panels may not be desirable. At the same time, foldable smartphones using OLED panels will also be the focus for mobile phone manufacturers. Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, LG, etc. will launch related products this year.
