Here’s how the dark mode of Android Q will work

Google Android Q

Among the new features that will be introduced by Android Q is the Dark Mode, which can be activated through a special option in the display settings. The confirmation comes from the first build obtained in the recent weeks by XDA Developers, which verified the impact of the new mode on the entire system.

The new mode covers the entire system interface, Quick Settings panel, settings and the entire framework. Obviously Google does not intend to limit itself to applying the dark theme to the only system interface but wants to use it for all of its applications in the system. Applications such as Messages, Dialer, Contacts, News, Play Games, YouTube and Maps already have a toggle that allows you to activate the dark mode and engineers have long been working to fix the other apps, so you have them ready for Google I/O 2019, scheduled for May.

On the other hand, the issue related to third-party applications is more complicated, requiring the implementation of the dark mode by the individual developers. Google has already introduced a new switch in the Developer Options in Android Q, to force the activation of the dark mode.

This is not an option capable of performing miracles, since it is not always able to apply the correct colors to make the appearance homogeneous. The result is very varied, since some applications already have a very convincing appearance while some seem really unrealistic.

Do not confuse the dark mode with the inversion of colors, since the result is in most cases completely different. In any case, Google has prepared a series of tools, illustrated in detail in the “Cost of a Pixel Color” video at the Android Developer Summit in 2018.

If Google applications should be able to offer Dark Mode natively when launching Android Q, it is desirable that the adoption by the third-party apps be fast, to provide a homogeneous interface.
