Nokia 6 finally receives official Android 9 Pie update

The Nokia 6 was the smartphone responsible for kicking the Nokia’s unlikely revival by the hands of HMD Global. The handset was developed by the Finnish startup and manufactured by the Taiwanese giant Foxconn. It became a success in the Chinese market, followed by a global release in MWC 2017.

Now with two years of existence, the midrange smartphone is ready to receive the Android 9 Pie update. HMD’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas, announce the good news through his Twitter account earlier today.

Gizchina News of the week

While Nokia smartphones are far from competing with mainstream devices from Samsung or Huawei, the Finnish company is miles ahead when it comes to providing software support for all its smartphones. The 5.5-inch smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 430 and was released with Android Nougat straight out of the box back in 2017. It received the first iteration of Android Oreo nearly a year ago.

The second Oreo-flavored update was delivered back in the last Spring, and despite the fact that the Nokia 6 was released before Nokia’s entrance in the Android One program, it is still part of the brand’s commitment in keeping its entire Android device lineup “pure, secure, and up to date” as long as possible.

Following in the list of devices eligible for Android Pie update we have the Nokia 5.1, 3.1, and 2.1. The update is scheduled for March, followed by the Nokia 3 and Nokia 1 update that is scheduled for “early Q2.” That’s impressive to see such low-end smartphones receiving the latest flavor of Android since most companies give zero priority to cheap smartphone class.
