One of the biggest concerns with first-gen foldable phones like the Huawei Mate X is their display. Since these bendable screens are made of a plastic material and curve outside (in the case of the Mate X), they are very likely to get scratched easily even without use. Thankfully, Corning, maker of the famous Gorilla Glass, is working on a foldable glass that will protect future foldable smartphones, says a report from Wired.
Since this is foldable glass we’re talking about here, the challenge for Corning is to make a protective layer that is thin and enough to bend and yet be tough to prevent harm to the underlying display. The company is currently testing a .1 millimetre thin glass with a bend radius of 5 millimetres. The glass maker hopes to combine its expertise in making Willow Glass (rollable) and Gorilla Glass to come up with a solution.

However, John Bayne, SVP, Gorilla Glass, Corning, thinks that Corning will have these new protectable layers ready in due time. That is when foldable phones go mainstream which we expect to see in a couple of years. Latest reports have hinted that Apple is working on its own foldable smartphone and it is possible the first Apple foldable could come with such a glass protection.
