When we talk about flagship chips in the Android camps, we refer to the likes of Snapdragon 855, Exynos 9820 and Kirin 980. However, it appears that a new flagship SoC will be available later this year and it is coming from MediaTek. In a recent interview, MediaTek confirmed that it will announce a 7nm-based chip which supports 5G network this year. This chip will be definitely better than its current “flagship” SoC, Helio P90.

The Helio P90 was released in December last year, it uses a 12nm process and was the first to introduce the Cortex A75 big core on the MTK platform. With its integrated PowerVR GM 9446 GPU and APU 2.0, the performance is similar to the Snapdragon 710. Finbarr Moynihan, vice president of sales and business development for MediaTek Europe and the United States, pointed out that the upcoming SoC is positioned for the high-end market, but he did not confirm whether this means that the Helio X series will officially return.
MediaTek says that this processor will be “5G-capable” which suggests that the chip maker may not integrate the 5G baseband at the SoC level but it will be compatible with Helio M70 5G baseband. After all, Qualcomm’s first new flagship SoC with integrated 5G will not be available until the first half of next year. In addition, at the Helio P90 release event, MediaTek has announced to reporters that its next-generation chip will introduce the Cortex A76 architecture, which should be this 7nm chip.
