Xiaomi prepares a smartphone with 64MP dual camera as indicated by the Camera app

Redmi Note 7S

Xiaomi seems to be preparing a surprise because, as we have learned, the company is preparing to launch a smartphone with a 64MP camera configuration.

The guys at XDA have discovered a reference to a 64MP “ultra-pixel” mode in the MIUI Camera application of the latest MIUI 10 version China Developer ROM for the Redmi K20 Pro.

The strings cited by the developer also correspond to a default text, “64MP DUAL CAMERA,” for the watermark on images.

Currently, the Samsung 64MP Isocell Bright GW1 sensor is the only sensor with 64MP resolution available on the market, so we assume that Xiaomi will use this sensor.

The Isocell Bright GW1 sensor has 0.8μm pixels and is compatible with Tetracell 4-in-1 technology, which is Samsung’s name for pixel binning technology that allows four pixels to be put together in one to improve performance with little light.

In addition, Samsung claims that this sensor supports up to 100dB of HDR in real time, which is 66% higher than the 60dB HDR of other devices. In practice, we may see a surprisingly high dynamic range and contrast in the images captured with this sensor.

This finding confirms a recent rumor of the Ice Universe filter, which claimed Redmi is working on a “mysterious” smartphone with a Samsung 64MP GW1 sensor. In addition, the supposed Redmi smartphone will be the first device that will come with this sensor.
