In recent times, there have been reports of a possible Redmi 5G smartphone. Recently, the vice president of Xiaomi Group and general manager of Redmi brand, Lu Weibing, talked about some possibilities with 5G smartphones.
He said that with the arrival of 5G, the battery capacity is getting bigger and the phone is getting heavier (>200g) and thicker (>9mm). According to him, we can not have it all in the 5G era. It is either we prioritize the battery capacity and accept the thickness/weight or we accept a small battery capacity. He believes that at the current level of technology, these are the only options in the 5G era. Although he made no direct reference to the upcoming Redmi 5G smartphone, we can safely infer that the Redmi 5G smartphone should weigh above 200g. This is because Redmi will most likely stick with a bigger or at least average battery.
Gizchina News of the week
Recall that the new Xiaomi 5G smartphone comes with a 4000mAh battery. It is 8.95 mm thick and weighs 196g. These are just within the thickness parameters listed by Lu Weibing. We can expect something similar from the Redmi model. However, as far as the current smartphone technology is concerned, for a variety of reasons, the smartphone battery can not be light and thin while the capacity remains high. Now, with the advent of the 5G, what would be your preferred choice? Smaller battery? or thicker/heavier device?
