With the launch of the UMi X2 Turbo many readers have been asking what are the differences between the MT6589 and the newer MT6589T? Keep reading for those answers and more!
The Chinese phone market is exploding thanks to Google’s Android OS and Mediatek’s range of high-power, low-cost processors. Mediatek are a Taiwanese chip manufacturer who have risen to fame and fortune be manufacturing SoC (System on a Chip) solutions aimed primarily at the Chinese phone market. The popularity if Mediatek is expanded past Asia now and companies and customers around the world look to Mediatek low-cost, high-performance processors.
This year Mediatek launched their first quad-core SoC named the MT6589 (MTK6589). The MT6589, and its variants are Cortex A7 28nm chips capable of running at 1.2Ghz. The MT6589 also provides support for up to 13 mega-pixel cameras, 1080p video capture, and 1920 x 1080 FHD LCD displays, making it the perfect chip for this year’s flagship Chinese phones.
Gizchina News of the week
3 models of MT6589
Due to popularity Mediatek have launched 2 additional versions of the MT6589, an entry-level MT6589M and an updated MT6589T. Each chip is based on the standard MT6589 however features slightly different specifications. For example the MT6589M only supports 8 mega-pixel cameras, 720p video capture and QHD resolution displays, while the MT6589T (Turbo) runs at a faster 1.5Ghz with a faster 357Mhz GPU.
To make things simpler we have created the below table which highlights the differences between these 3 quad-core Mediatek processors.

OMG ..all I want for xmas is the jiayu G4 premium Turbo…..
Yea.. Mee too
Yea that would really be great! But i seriously doubt it 😛
Xmas? Which year bro? 😛
By Xmas this MTK Turbo will feel like crap comparing with other to unveil yet!
This year, ive had the zopo c2 and it felt like crap was laggy, evantually rooted it and applied a rom called king slim. after i rooted it, it was fine with the exception on games. they all ran crap, from temple run to real racing 3.
my c2 was the mtk6589. and it was seriously rubbish. i wish i got a phone with a lower resolution and a bigger cpu.
LESS PIXALS, MORE BALLS!
There are lots phones with MTK6589T, 2GB RAM, 32GB ROM now.

but i remember like mt6589 support up to 42 mbps even zopo zp980 supports it.
what about mt6582,mt658x looks cheap
I’d like to know more about mt6582 too… I think it uses Mali graphics.
What about SGX544 … is only single core @ all SoC? Not MP3 or MP4?
It’s just a single core version. Mediatek were looking for something cheap so … it’s not an Exynos you know, that one has a different price too.
That’s why I feel 1920×1080 is too much even for a mtk6589.
Ok, thanks. I can test it when i get my ZP980 next week 😉
So which smartphone are avaible and have the mtk6589T.
Also what antutu score does it get?
Cant you simply clock your current mtk6589 to have the same speed? i mean the die size didnt shrinked so what chang have they made in the hardware?
No Antutu just yet
Sony C3,Mlais 58+, G6……….
If the chip is capable of HSPA+, why does UMI X2 website say it only supports older 3G or UMTS? Doesn’t mediatek SOC also have the 3G radio antennas?
You have wrong information modem – the maximum HSDPA + speed is 42 Mbps, not 21
When will there be a chinese phone-maker that releases a budget-prized phone with a screen size that isn’t bigger than 4.3″ with the MT6589. 🙁 Still waiting for it!
Really like the bang-for-bucks Jiayu G4 and G3 but the screensizes are too big in my opinion!!
Well done Andi!
Jiayu is far too slow to make a phone with turbo cpu ! This is realy bad… 4.3” or 4” it will be next year for sure the big ones are coming out this year.
The 4.7 is fine but only if it has a 3000 bat or more like the Lenovo p780 with 5” and 4000bat…
looks like Chinese phones are outdated before they are on the market. LOL
Not really. There are Chinese phones with Qualcomm SOCs or even Intel SOCs. Mediatek aims for the the budget user, to provide best bang for the buck and in that it’s second to none.
Sure for 200$ you only get 13 000 in Antutut whereas the S4 has more than twice as much. At the end of the day though … do you really need all that power ? I have a 1.2 dual core A5 Qualcomm SOC and it’s more than enough for my needs ( 6000 in Antutu ).
i think that is more important the ram for the performance of a phone, the RAM 🙂
I agree with you… this phone is not even LTE…
you will change it in one year… where is fair durability ????

What app can I use to show that the CPU is a T variant instead of the stock standard or even an M? Thx.
@ Vtdone – You can use “Android System Info”, “CPU-Z” “Quadrant” and a variety of other apps 🙂
Thanks. I’ve tried them all but they all say I’ve only got a 6589 1.2GHz instead of a ‘T’ 1.5GHz version. Looks like I have an older version 🙁
