UMi X2 Turbo benchmarks published, our first look at MT6589T power

UMi have been unnaturally fast to produce sample models of the UMi X2 Turbo with updated 1.5Ghz MT6589T processor, and lucky Chinese tech sites have already been given review units which they have promptly benchmarked.

As we now know, the UMi X2 will now be launched on May 15th an instead of shipping with the original 1.2Ghz MT6589 chip, will instead go on sale with a more powerful 1.5Ghz MT6589T processor instead. Not only is the processor faster than the original but the PowerVR SGC 544 GPU runs faster too, full details here.

UMi will also be launching two versions of the X2 now, a 1GB RAM, 16GB ROM model at 1199 Yuan ($195) and a 2GB RAM 32GB ROM 1499 Yuan ($244) model, as usual these are the Chinese retail prices, international buyers can expect prices closer to $295 for the premium model.

Popular Chinese site Zol have already received their review unit (ours should arrive next week) and have ran a number of benchmark apps on the phone to see what it is capable of.

Gizchina News of the week

umi x2 antutu

Antutu scores have the UMi X2 turbo reaching benchmarks of 14525, which is better than previous 2GB RAM scores, especially considering the 1920 x 1080 FHD 1080 display.

umi x2 basemark

The UMi X2 scores 242 in Basemark, for those of you unsure Basemark is used to test game graphics performance.

umi x2 quadrant

And Quadrant ran on the phone gets 4759, placing it above the HTC One X.

A full in-depth review with more benchmarks has been conducted by Zol which and republished on the UMi forums here. We won’t translate all of it as we intend to conduct our own review in the coming weeks.

What about nenamark? Has it improved from the 29fps that it was?

Umi has increased India prices for 2GB version from 14k to 16k citing Indian customs duty!

    • Ramol Biswas
      May 10, 2013

The increase is almost 18%. Customs duty (which they evade by making the boxes look like books) cannot be that much…

      • May 10, 2013

Don’t think it’d be possible to evade customs with so many shipments.

Good but only Umi know that there is a turbo CPU model?

That is the Antutu rating for the RAM

wow that’s bad news for Jiayu if Umi manages to deliver on March 15th with a 5 inch FHD display, “godzilla glass” and MT6589 Turbo who will wait for the G4? if Andy gives a review then the X2 will be a winner to keep it fair i think Jiayu should’ve anticipated themselves and deliver the G4 premium version about the same time or before Umi and maybe allow Andy to do a review on it aswell :D, because Umi already has a killer design.. and looks really well made so if they get more trustable than Jiayu(Umi S1 is already available while the quadcore G3 nowhere to be seen) it will ruin the game ..

This link very clear about import duty on mobile phone in India
    http://www.dutycalculator.com/hs-code-duty-rate-import-restrictions/851712/mobile-phone/8517.12.0080/8517.12.0090/844/
so UMI India distributor is totally wrong about ‘recent import duty increase’

Would use Jiayu the MT6589T too for the G4 advanced flagship?
    Otherwise UMI make the game.

I expected more score…. I really want to see nenamark score.

I am not blown away with this score.
    I expected around 16k

    • What did you expect from a slight bump in frequencies? Magic?

      • Camaman
        May 11, 2013

You are right. 10% is what should have been expected.
Wont help you much with 1080p if it was an issue on the 1.2GHz.

      May 12, 2013

If you can evade custom, sure go ahead.

  13. May 11, 2013

Is there any change that the phone is really for sale on the 16th may? I still even can’t find the 2gb normal premium version for sale……..

And with all the other 2gb RAM phones also delayed till august -G4- and late june -N003-…….

And how much wil those turbo variants cost? more than 300 dollar?

It is a case of wishful thinking (or hoping rather). I was actually thinking of just buying a more established brand now and then seeing what the state of play with all these manufacturers is in 12 months time !!

    • Lola
      May 11, 2013

well that’s good i guess but in 12 months time it will be the same all over again somehow they’ll manage to promise more and more so you could try one now to see if it’s worded otherwise just stick with more established international brands

I really want to know how the MTK 6589T works with the 1080p screen… That’s my fear… Anybody have a clue? Even with the MTK 6589… Thanks!

    • May 11, 2013

We’ll soon know for sure. Watch out for our review

I’m dying to try, I want to have belief in these alternative brands & I hope they produce a quality product that will last, and not something that stops working after one month. I want to not only buy a smartphone but an android mini tablet – maybe the Ramos X10, Cube U35GT or Chuwi minipad, but the second generation Nexus 7 is on the horizon & its sounds very tempting especially with android 4.3

    • Lola
      May 11, 2013

well in Europe i think you can find good tablets and not so expensive..i don’t really “trust” chinese tablets i can’t quite put my finger on it but it always seems unfinished so i would wait for the nexus7
but i would like to try some phone right now, don’t want to wait 3 months to get one, of course it could stop working after a day 🙁
so i’ll wait for Umi X2 in order to choose one with so much offer and don’t feel like you could buy a S3 or S4 you have to focus on what you need
      🙂

    May 11, 2013

We can live in hope for the Umi X2, and if it does turn out to be a quality product, then that bodes well for the future (fingers crossed). Perhaps they will manufacture a tablet as well. Lets take one step at a time 🙂

If hope doesn’t come in the next 6 weeks, I think i’m going to try the Newman K1, as I think it should be a solid performer.
