Samsung wants to keep covering the market of rugged smartphones with a new addition to its portfolio. The Galaxy Xcover FieldPro is aimed at agents in the field and first responders.

The Samsung Galaxy Xcover FieldPro bears the MIL-STD-810G and IP68 certifications. For that reason, it can survive under 1.5m (5ft) of water for half an hour can go through adverse conditions and resist hard shocks. Moreover, it boasts a 4,500mAh battery which can be swapped in the field with the second battery included in the package. Worth noting that the device also counts with pogo pins allowing users to charge it in a specific charging dock.
The Galaxy Xcover FieldPro boasts most of Galaxy S9’s specifications. The S9 is old, but that isn’t a bad thing for a rugged smartphone. Under the hood, we have the Exynos 9810 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. If that isn’t enough for extreme tasks, you can still expand the storage via a microSD card.

There’s a 5.1” screen with QHD resolution (16:9 aspect ratio) and an 8MP selfie camera on the front. Moving around to the back, we have a single 12MP camera with a triple-LED flash and a fingerprint scanner. The phone runs with Android 9 Pie out of the box, and there’s mention about an Android 10 update. But we wouldn’t hold our breath for it.
The rugged smartphone comes with dedicated buttons for push-to-talk and emergency requests. The latter can be programmed to send location data. The phone comes with Band 14, a dedicated channel used by first responders and currently run by the AT&T carrier. This feature is particularly useful in the US since this channel is strongly used by Ambulances, FEMA and the US Coast Guard, among others.
For now, it’s unclear how much this special smartphone will cost. Also, there’s no mention if it will be available for civilians. Apparently, Samsung will try to firm a contract with some governments.
