After several leaks and rumors, the OnePlus Concept One was finally unveiled at the CES 2020 taking place in Las Vegas.
The most striking design feature of the OnePlus Concept One is undoubtedly the “invisible camera” setup brought by the new color-shifting glass technology. Which can basically hide the rear cameras under layers of glass.

The color-shifting effect is achieved by using different layers of glass, one of which can be made darker by sending current to it. We’ve seen a similar technology on rooftops of super cars such as McLarens‘. Not by chance the smartphone is created in collaboration with the British automotive company. As a matter of fact, we also have a McLarens logo on the back of the handset.
Gizchina News of the week
According to OnePlus, the glass can change from transparent to full black 0.7s and consumes almost no power. OnePlus has spent nearly 18 months in R&D to bring ultra thin glass layers; with each one being 0.1mm and a total thickness of 0.35mm.
Additionally, the glass on top of the cameras also acts an ND filter. This can come in handy when recording videos outside on a bright day. But it could also worsen images shot indoors when light conditions aren’t optimal in our opinion. And yes, we mean with the feature turned off, of course.
Other than the high-tech glass, the OnePlus Concept One also comes with a very stylish leather back cover which has been customized by McLarens and inspired from car manufacturing.
In conclusion, the OnePlus Concept One is a great concept, but we believe it should remain just that – a concept. We’ve never had any complains about the “visibility” of rear camera setups; so why would you want to spend more to hide them? Additionally, as we previously mentioned, the lower light intake will be useful when shooting outside and a burden when going indoors.
